Part-Time Copy Editor/Fact Checker

DISCOVER is seeking an energetic, detail-oriented person to fill the role of the part-time Copy Editor/Fact Checker. This position works with our editorial staff to maintain style and accuracy for all magazine and website editorial content.

Primary duties of the job include reviewing print and online copy for spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and style errors; checking magazine layouts and display copy at various points in the production process. May include some writing assignments (sidebars, captions, Web content).

In addition to copy editing, this position will also verify facts and data for assigned editorial content for the magazine and website, according to DISCOVER standards (training will be provided). Duties include reviewing and confirming accuracy of all sources, and preparing fact-checking reports for all assigned stories.

Requirements:

• Two years copy editing experience with magazine, newspaper or website
• BA in English, journalism or communications
• Interest in science writing and, familiarity with scientific jargon and terminology is essential
• Superior grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary skills; familiarity with AP style preferred
• Commitment to accuracy, attention to detail
• Good telephone, communication and interviewing skills
• Persistence, ingenuity and efficiency in tracking down information/sources
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word; familiarity with InCopy/InDesign preferred
• Schedule: Part-time 20-25 hours per week. Preferred work schedule of 9 am – 2 pm daily. Flexibility with scheduling is necessary. Depending on the magazine’s production cycle, some weeks may require more hours; some weeks less. May be required occasionally to work evenings or weekends to connect with an elusive source or a source located in a different time zone.
