The Senior Manager, External Communications, is the editorial director for enterprise external communications. The role requires both strategic and tactical communications skills. The person in this role is responsible for the overall vision, cohesiveness, and quality of high profile communication channels. You will manage planning, writes and assigns articles, and ensures all publications are delivered flawlessly, on time, and on budget. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional storytelling, writing and editorial skills, and have prior experience with leading and developing sustainability reports at a publicly traded company. You will also manage an external team of experienced writers, designers, agency partners, and other creatives.

This role reports to the Director, Corporate Communications, and is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

What you will do:

  • Create and lead a year-round program to clearly communicate Rockwell's sustainability objectives, serving as editor-in-chief of the Sustainability Report, Sustainability Content Hub and 3BL news distribution platform, exercising a wide latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments. 
  • Serve as copy chief for the department, ensuring that all products that leave the department are on message, on tone, cohesive, and error free. 
  • Frequently interact with senior leaders and subject matter experts to research and develop content, and to provide communications counsel. 
  • Recruit and manage a seasoned team of external writers, designers, and other creatives. 
  • Conduct regular meetings with key business partners to learn about new projects, initiatives, events, and programs across supported departments and build tight, trusting relationships with these partners to enhance interactions and workflows. 
  • Anticipate questions and concerns for all topics and projects, and proactively address in communications planning. 
  • Provide guidance to other communications professionals with varying degrees of experience, mentoring them as they manage their business partners, projects, and workloads. 
  • Serve as company spokesperson as needed.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree 
  • Legal authorization to work in the US is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or English 
  • Master's degree 
  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience. 
  • At least 15 years content creation experience 
  • Successful track record leading projects that impact company reputation and/or establish the company viewpoint/messaging on a given topic. 
  • Demonstrated ability to create formal and informal networks with key decision makers and to counsel and influence them on communication and sustainability topics. 
  • Extensive track record and mastery of writing and editing for publication and managing complex and high stakes projects. 
  • Demonstrates ability to deliver strategic objectives and goals, and then to create, execute and measure communications plans to deliver on those objectives and goals. 
  • 5+ years media relations experience working for a global Fortune 500 company. 
  • Strong preference for 3+ years experience working in technology companies and large enterprises (over 5,000 employees), and companies navigating rapid growth and change 
  • 5+ years experience working with C-suite executives and managing stakeholders across all levels of the organization 
  • 5+ years experience working in other communications functions such as Internal Communications, Digital Marketing and Investor Relations 
  • Demonstrated experience leading corporate sustainability communication initiatives and publications within a complex corporate environment 
  • Hands-on experience working with communications technology platforms such as Business Wire, Percolate, Cision, 3BL, and SharePoint
