Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Wisconsin is a growing construction trade association of nearly 1,000 member companies seeking a Marketing and Communications Director to join its team in Madison. This is an exciting position with an organization that appreciates and rewards talent. The Marketing and Communications Director works closely with the President, Vice President and other staff to develop and implement marketing, communications, and media relations strategies. Work includes internal/external communications, brand development, product/service promotions to members, prospective members, construction users, and the news media. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for successfully interacting with staff and association members. This individual is the main spokesperson for the news media and a presenter/emcee at various association events. The person must be skillful with audio/visual equipment and be able to deliver information in various formats. This position supervises one staff person and works with approximately 25 internal staff members.

This is a full-time, exempt position working in a relaxed environment at our far east side Madison location, not a remote or hybrid position. Some fieldwork and state/regional travel required. Overview:

The Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin (ABC) Marketing and Communications Director works closely with the President and Vice President to develop and implement marketing, communications, public and media relations strategies. The position responsibilities include internal (members) and external communications, brand development, product/service promotions to members, prospective members, construction users, and news media. Strong interpersonal skills are necessary for successfully interacting with staff and association members. This person is the spokesperson for media relations and presents at association events. The individual must be able to deliver information in multiple formats. The director supervises a direct report to a marketing and communications manager and works closely with other directors and staff.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute strategic marketing plan. 
  • Serves as news media contact for the organization. 
  • Writes and distributes news releases and uploads news content to websites. 
  • Generate, write, edit, and publish content for blogs, e-newsletters, magazines, etc. 
  • Curate industry-related content from member experts. 
  • Assist with website content population and website maintenance. 
  • Work with membership team on recruitment and retention of members. 
  • Work with other staff on successful execution of educational programs, services, and events.
  • Assist with planning and execution of member events and engagement. 
  • Oversee implementation of traditional and digital advertising and sponsorships. 
  • Provide support in the development of promotional brochures, flyers, and ads. 
  • Monitor association’s effectiveness/success in reaching target audiences. 
  • Serve as host/emcee for larger association events. 
  • Coordinate and produce internal audio and video productions. 
  • Assist with chapter construction awards program. 
  • Revise and update member resource documents and articles as necessary. 
  • Assist with chapter social media presence and engagement. 
  • Assist with proofing of chapter documents and other staff communications. 
  • Serve as staff liaison to a marketing and business development committee of member volunteers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strategic planning and/or ability to think strategically. 
  • Degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism or related field. 
  • Minimum of seven years of work experience in marketing, or communications-related role. 
  • Minimum of two years of news reporting/writing experience. 
  • Strong knowledge of public relations, crisis communications/communication strategy 
  • Customer service-oriented and strong diplomacy and discretion for members and stakeholder relationships. 
  • Excellent writing skills, strong knowledge of grammar, and sharp editing ability. 
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Self-motivated and ambitious. 
  • Positive attitude and team oriented. 
  • Detail-oriented. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work in association with marketing or communications is a plus. 
  • Strong familiarity with web content management. 
  • Knowledge of website analytics and SEO. 
  • Video/audio editing abilities. 
  • Strong stage, voice and/or video presence. 
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, Illustrator and/or Photoshop; familiarity with Premiere Pro and Audition helpful. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to read and write at close range. 
  • Ability to use manual dexterity. 
  • Ability to work in an office environment. 
  • Ability to move A/V equipment.
