Job Summary:

The person hired for the position of Communications Manager will be responsible for planning, writing, and execution of strategic internal communications and executive messaging. We’re looking for a strong and versatile writer and innovative thinker who will bring new ideas to engage employees and take our communications to the next level.

This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military environments to a 3M career.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Create and manage the internal and external communications strategy for M&SC. 
  • Builds communication plans to execute the strategy including goals, stakeholder analysis, target audience segmentation, program branding, and communication tactics. 
  • Accountable for executive leadership communications (speeches, internal/external presentations, thought leadership talking points, etc) 
  • Organizes and manages communication activities including: target audience research, designing/executing creative cross-media tactics (e.g.: web, video, blogs, virtual events, events/campaigns), and managing the program brand. 
  • Implements communication plans that support achievement of 3M goals and strategic direction. This includes development of messaging, presentations, and broad 3M employee and program communications that concisely and compellingly address business and organizational needs. 
  • Consults with internal clients to understand their communication needs. Develops comprehensive plans including strategies and tactics to achieve communication goals. Uses proven methods as well as innovative new approaches and vehicles to engage employees. 
  • Writes key messages and compelling employee-facing communications. Makes complex subject matter easy to understand, especially for global audiences. 
  • Leads and develops engaging and impactful presentations, talking points and scripts for leaders including visuals and videos, partnering with Creative Services and 3M Design team as appropriate to align with 3M Design and Brand standards. 
  • Manages annual communications budget; recommends resource reallocations to meet communication objectives. Ensures production of deliverables consistent with communication strategy and plan, with significant measurable impact on the organization's results. 
  • Analyzes data to assess communications ROI (return on investment) utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods. Select and oversee research to measure impacted user (eg: employee, customer, vendor) awareness and recommend appropriate changes to the communication plan. 
  • Supervises and directs communications specialists/analysts and/or professional services on communications projects and communication channels (eg: 3M; Go, Blogs, Sharepoint sites, etc). 
  • Partners cross-functionally with colleagues (including Corporate Marketing, Public Relations, global Communications teams and select agencies) to ensure alignment with 3M Manufacturing and Supply Chain objectives. Selects and manages external vendors as needed following 3M processes. Monitors activities of vendors to meet expectations.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution 
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of communications experience in a private, public, government or military environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or English 
  • Seven or more years of HR or internal communications experience is preferred 
  • Experience planning and writing content for HR portals or intranet sites 
  • Experience writing in the AP style 
  • Experience working with external creative and technical vendors and agencies 
  • Supervisory experience 
  • Experience in writing presentations, speeches and/or scripts 
  • Experience with internal collaboration/social media tools 
  • Experience working with executives 
  • Very strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to translate complex material into engaging communications 
  • Strategic thinking and ability to develop creative solutions 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including Word and PowerPoint 
  • Strong editorial skills including: grammar, spelling, punctuation and working knowledge of AP style 
  • Excellent collaboration skills and ability to develop solid working relationships with partners and vendors 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to persuade others in matrix environment.
