Scope:

The Project Communications Manager develops and implements external and internal communications and related activities in support of project and business objectives and strategies.

Principal Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for Fluor and joint venture team communications and associated duties for an infrastructure megaproject in Chicago.
  • Works closely with project leadership and functional team members as required to develop and implement communications programs, procedures and initiatives aligned with project and client objectives.
  • Provides editorial oversight for external and internal communications content for the project, including but not limited to, press releases, presentations, feature stories, message development, speeches, videos, websites as applicable and other supporting materials
  • Coordinates with project leadership (including construction management, Health, Safety & Environment, and human resources) on communications needs, content and deliverables
  • Regularly interacts with Fluor’s wider Business Communications & Media team and shares best practices and communications excellence
  • Liaises with client project communications teams to support client contract requirements for communications
  • Manage, direct and oversee a communications staff to support the construction communications and community benefits/charitable giving programs
  • Manage, direct and oversee a communications/public involvement subcontractor and manage subcontract
  • Supports the client with stakeholder, public outreach and government relations
  • Maintain good client and stakeholder relations
  • Establish a strong working partnership with the joint venture partners, the client, area stakeholders and the associated community
  • Acts as media and public affairs liaison and spokesperson as required
  • Acts as point person for crises/issues within region, project, specialty or function
  • Maintains a positive image for Fluor on site and in the community
  • Facilitates communications with the site project employees and community as required
  • Performs assessments of site communications channels, processes and procedures, and provides recommendations for continuous improvement
  • Tracks and reports metrics to demonstrate effectiveness of communications programs
  • Stays current on communications best practices and trends and integrates into communications programs
  • Supports the Fluor brand
  • Leverages internal and external resources to administer policies and procedures consistently for the project
  • Analyzes situations, identifies and forecasts pertinent problems and evaluates realistic options; and recommends and implements appropriate course of action
  • Organizes and prioritizes a variety of tasks in an effective and timely manner, sets priorities and meets deadlines
  • Maintains compliance with all applicable policies, procedures and global standards
  • Adheres to and supports Fluor's Health, Safety & Environmental and Sustainability policies
  • May need to travel to attend to business-related matters
  • Meets expectations on attendance and punctuality
  • Partners with the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program and supports efforts with reports and presentations, ensuring required client reporting is complete
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Job Requirements;

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications or related degree combined with substantial previous work experience in the Communications field and minimum of six to 12 or more years of related work experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders, such as project management, coworkers, clients, vendors, contractors and others
  • Technical understanding necessary to complete the job
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, state/province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines
  • Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner

Other Job Requirements:

  • Generally favorable indoor office workspace, and/or; 
  • Various levels of environmental conditions including but not limited to project worksites and vendor/client facilities which may have temporary office space, moving mechanical parts and vibration; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles and extreme temperatures and high noise levels

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous project, transit and/or construction site experience is a plus 
  • Media relations experience especially with issues and crises 
  • Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading and oral presentation skills 
  • Ability to think and plan strategically 
  • Team player – ability to influence without authority and work well together in a project team 
  • Spirit of collaboration especially with client and owner communications professional colleagues 
  • Flexibility for adapting in a fast-paced environment 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to communicate effectively at all levels inside and outside the organization in fluid situations 
  • Working knowledge of technology-based communications (Internet/Intranet, social media and other vehicles and their use as part of a strategic communications plan) 
  • Proven efficiency in project and time management – self-starter with ability to manage own workload 
  • Ability to produce consistently high quality work within tight deadlines 
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to remain positive and calm under pressure 
  • Sensitivity to diverse work force, languages and cultures
