Purpose of Position: The Communications Specialist assists the communications team in the development and implementation of the district’s communication plan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the planning, development, and implementation of the district’s communication plan. 
  • Writes for a variety of audiences and purposes (e.g. newsletters, community news publications, social media, marketing materials, staff e-news, news releases). 
  • Assists in the development and production of communication materials for the communications department, other district departments, and buildings, including content generation, graphic design, off-site print coordination 
  • Manages and coordinates social media campaigns 
  • Creates, proofreads, and reviews communications, reports, and other documents 
  • Provides project assistance and clerical support to employees, including district administration 
  • Provides administrative support for Superintendent Manages, monitors and updates district-based websites, as directed 
  • Completes general office duties, as directed 
  • Photographs and records district events and activities and produces them for communication materials 
  • Assists with media relations, as directed 
  • Assists with the preparation and coordination of media communication 
  • Assists with departmental activities and their preparation 
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with major course work in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or related field 
  • Evidence of technological proficiency needed for communications (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Google Apps, digital photography, video production, social networking tools) 
  • Detailed-oriented with proven ability to be consistently accurate 
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with varied audiences (e.g. parents, community members, elected officials, employees) 
  • Ability to effectively communicate with employees, community members, and students. 
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with employees and community members 
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow district and school policies and procedures 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills 
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team Interest in working in a district environment 
  • A positive, customer service-oriented approach to work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in communications or public relations 
  • Knowledge of a variety of communication platforms (e.g. print, web, social media, video) 
  • Knowledge of and use of AP style 
  • Previous experience working within a public entity

  • Must be willing and able to work in the following conditions: busy, noisy, with consistent interruptions 
  • Ability to perform the following actions occasionally: sitting, using hands dexterously, talking, hearing, lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, reaching, stooping, walking, standing, bending, crouching 
  • Must be willing and able to work weekends and/or after hours when needed. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license where travel among the district buildings and outside of district occurs on a regular, ongoing basis
