Position Summary:

The Communications Specialist supports the Kemper Corporation and its business units with a range of external communication activities focused in the areas of public relations and social media. This role will contribute to goals related to increasing awareness and enhancing the reputation of the Kemper corporate and business unit brands, and impacting overall business goals.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Create and maintain media lists for proactive public relations campaigns.
  • Write and distribute press releases for various communications initiatives.
  • Monitor media coverage and compile coverage for internal reports.
  • Screen initial media calls, handle proactive outreach to key media, and accurately and correctly position responses to the media.
  • Research and draft news releases, articles, story pitches to reporters, and media briefings.
  • Assist with proof-reading and editing materials as needed.
  • Develop and monitor content for various traditional and digital internal and external communication channels.
  • Work with the Corporate Communications team to provide support on special projects for external communication, including campaigns, events and research.

Position Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience in public relations or corporate communications.
  • BA/BS degree in journalism, PR, communications, or related field.
  • Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills are required.
  • Experience with reactive and proactive media relations.
  • Experience with social media content strategy for enhancing reach and engagement.
  • Results-oriented team player with the ability to build and maintain productive relationships with peers and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work independently, execute tasks efficiently, and be flexible and adaptive to changing priorities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively manage multiple projects, set priorities, and execute on tight deadlines.
  • Attentiveness to detail to ensure accuracy and quality of work.
  • Quick learner and self-starter.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
