Job Summary:

The person hired for the position of Communications Specialist will be part of a team dedicated to protecting and advancing 3M’s brand and reputation. The ideal candidate is one who thrives in a fast-paced environment, is able to effectively collaborate with others, and is eager to hone and expand their skills at a global Fortune 500 company.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide communications support and content for public relations programs and to address sensitive corporate issues, topics, and situations. 
  • Work to ensure successful outcomes by preparing 3M subject experts, editors, reporters, and producers to properly shape interviews. 
  • Write news releases, message points, situation analyses and owned content as needed. 
  • As spokesperson, represent and speak for 3M on a variety of topics. 
  • Apply contemporary knowledge of industry trends, geopolitical events, and economic conditions in every aspect of the job. 
  • Develop and execute stakeholder communications plans. 
  • Collaborate with and guide the work of external vendors as needed. 
  • Maintain and improve emergency response playbooks. 
  • Develop and implement strategies to train local and global partners on emergency response communications. 
  • Manage media monitoring on key issues.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of combined experience in corporate communications, media relations, and/or journalism in a private, public, government or military environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to translate technical information into relevant audience-specific messages. 
  • Experience advising organizational leaders on communications. 
  • Demonstrated skills in influencing, negotiating and facilitating in a cross-functional environment. 
  • Strong collaboration skills with ability to build and maintain strong relationships at multiple levels across the organization. 
  • Displays professional, confident, and positive demeanor, with ability to maintain poise under pressure. 
  • Excellent writing and verbal communications skills, interpersonal skills, and project management skills. 
  • Advanced degree in journalism, public relations or communications.
