Assistant Director, Communications, Marketing, and Events

Open Heart Magic

About Open Heart Magic:

Our mission is to use the therapeutic power of magic and laughter to energize and strengthen seriously ill children in Chicago area hospitals, and aid their healing. We strive to reach young patients one-by-one regardless of their disease, medical situation or physical ability so that all children may benefit from this engaging and entertaining therapy.

Open Heart Magic (OHM) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) Chicago-based organization founded in 2004. Our personalized interactions help children feel special, more confident and empowered during a scary and stressful time. By inviting them to be a part of the interaction, we energize kids and help them find the strength they need to heal. In 2018, our volunteers reached over 12,000 children and their families--and we continue to grow.

Open Heart Magic, a children's charity and leader in bringing hope and laughter to seriously ill kids in children's hospitals, is looking for an Assistant Director, Communications, Marketing, and Events

It’s an exciting time as we begin our 15th year and prepare to launch our Bedside Magic Program to reach even more kids at our 15th children’s hospital partner. As we continue to grow our organization to meet new requests for children’s hospital programming in Chicago, Ann Arbor, and Cleveland, we're also working to build a long-term foundation for expansion to new states. Nothing is more exciting than growth and we need a passionate and driven person who wants to be a part of this growth to impact the lives of thousands more kids.

Want an exciting glimpse of what we're all working towards?

Take a look: https://openheartmagic.org/one-smile-at-a-time/

How do we make all this happen? The OHM community has always been our secret sauce – 170 specially trained and highly screened volunteer magicians in three states, a dynamic Board of Directors, a driven Professional Board, 80 athletes on our Charity Team. The exciting part? As we reach more and more kids through expanded programming, our volunteer community grows, too. This creates more opportunities for people to get involved and support the organization in reaching the next level.

With world-class hospital partners such as Lurie Children's Hospital, the University of Michigan Mott Children's Hospital, and the Cleveland Clinic, our staff works and thinks at a high level to ensure reliable programming from our dedicated Hospital Magician volunteers and consistent funding resources.

You'll be one of just 6 OHM staff members who work passionately to make our mission possible while engaging and appreciating the community of volunteers and supporters who help us reach over 12,000 kids at their hospital bedsides each year.

What you’ll do:

  • Devise an annual plan to recruit, retain, and engage our volunteers, Charity Team athletes, and other community members
  • Build communication/engagement campaigns, including email, social media, and special events for segments of our community
  • Jump in to our organization’s operations, streamlining existing processes, improving efficiencies, and taking ownership of some of them as well
  • And half of this job will be a little bit of everything across the spectrum – sometimes stuffing envelopes and writing Facebook ads, sometimes planning and implementing campaigns and strategic plans from start to finish, and everything in between. It's what we all do since we're a smaller organization.

Here is what's required for you to be successful at this role and love your work:

  • This is a different kind of marketing role, we need someone who knows how to create engaging appeals that inspire action. Every member of a nonprofit wants to feel appreciated and part of something meaningful.
  • We want people with business experience, either for a nonprofit or private sector. Experience in project planning and special events will give you a leg up to hit the ground running.
  • We're looking for someone with the leadership skills and courage to innovate, map out a plan to reach set goals, and deliver on the details.
  • We need a team player with great communication skills who is ready to wear multiple hats and who understands that the best way to get someone else to serve is by serving. You'll be the main liaison with the Professional Board and Ann Arbor and Cleveland Benefit committees, supporting and guiding leadership to put on meaningful events and driving their success.
  • Because of the fast pace, we're looking for a creative and proactive problem solver who can jump into any situation and take charge to help improve the organization. The advantage of this role is that you'll be able to come up with great ideas on your own. We need someone who will be proactive in making OHM operations better and is jazzed by that opportunity.

Other requirements:

  • Because our volunteers work 9-5 jobs, you will need to be flexible on working nights/weekends for events or meetings. This is a requirement for all OHM staff.
  • Most importantly, this is a fun organization with a meaningful mission. We're looking for someone who is excited about the prospect of having fun, wearing jeans and gym shoes to work, and being inspired by what they are doing.

What we offer:

  • Full-time position with total compensation of $50,000 to $57,000, depending on relevant experience and education. The total compensation listed includes an annual bonus.
  • A casual and fun office, with the opportunity to own projects and truly make an impact.
  • Use of Mac laptop provided; use of iPhone after 6 months of employment
  • Excellent medical insurance; 401K available after 6 months of employment
  • Paid time off for sick days, vacation, and holidays
  • Future compensation based on performance and OHM growth
