Responsible for oversight of the NFDA Communications division, including marketing, public relations, publications, art direction/branding, social media, consumer outreach initiatives, and research. This role also oversees the Association’s strategic planning process, working with all departments to ensure all are prepared and aligned to meet the Association’s goals.

Essential Responsibilities:

1. Oversight and management of the Communications division and the development of communications, marketing and public relations goals and strategies that effectively support the Association’s ability to reach both funeral professionals and consumer audiences and inspire them to engage in NFDA programs, initiatives and events.

2. Develop communications/marketing plans for NFDA’s conferences, initiatives and events and direct appropriate staff in implementation to achieve desired results.

3. Evaluate success of key communications and marketing initiatives by measuring outcomes as compared to key performance indicators. Make recommendations for enhancements going forward based on results.

4. Oversight of strategic planning for the Association, ensuring department-specific plans and strategies are in line with the NFDA strategic plan. Monitor progress across the Association and make recommendations for enhancements that will ensure progress in achieving the Association’s goals.

5. Oversight of NFDA’s brand strategy, ensuring brand messaging, assets and guidelines evolve as NFDA’s overall strategy evolves to anticipate and meet the needs of members and the funeral service profession.

6. Cultivate and enhance inter-department relationships to ensure effective and successful collaboration among all departments in the Association.

7. Supervise the Vice President- Consumer Engagement; Director of Marketing; Director of Public Relations; Editor/Publisher; and Research Manager.

8. Ensure messaging and tactics are aligned within the division to ensure consistency.

9. Oversee research strategies for the Association (e.g., member engagement, event feedback, consumer research, etc.). Analyze data and make recommendations for enhancements or updates to NFDA’s overall strategy and related marketing/communications strategies.

10. Identify and lead partnerships with other funeral service associations and professional deathcare organizations to support and amplify NFDA’s leadership position in the profession and enhance offerings to NFDA members.

11. Lead and inspire change within the Association with regard to best practices, new technologies and other opportunities to move the Association forward.

12. Oversee Communications division budgets, including working with team members responsible for each budget during the budget process and monitoring financials to ensure revenue and expenses are in line with budget goals.

13. Represent the Association at external functions including trade shows, charity events, government functions, conferences, and cross-Association advisory boards. Attendance at events may include speaking/presentation opportunities.

14. As required, attend meetings with key members or suppliers to develop and enhance membership opportunities and partnerships.

15. Collaborate with key staff to identify opportunities for growth, including non-dues revenue opportunities.

16. Establish and track key performance indicators for the marketing/communications division.

17. Other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business development with a focus on marketing, or related fields such as journalism, communications, advertising, or public relations.
  • A graduate degree (MBA) is required.
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience in leadership roles.
  • Have a working knowledge of economics, accounting, and data analysis.
  • Five (5) years of specialized skills, such as targeted marketing and social media strategy.
  • Solid foundation in marketing principles and statistics.
  • Professional certification; Certification of Marketing Management Professional (CMMP), Certified Professional Marketer (CPM) or Project Management Professional (PMP) preferred.
