Under the direction of the Cancer Center, Director of Communications, in alignment with the MCW Office of Communications, and with guidance from senior members of the Cancer Center Communications Team, this position will be responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies including regular content creation and publishing for the Center’s internal, external, and social media channels. The Communications Consultant will partner closely with communications team members to develop the Center’s Cancer Code newsletters; support priority communication plans and events; manage web content; track metrics and engagement trends; and develop and refine presentation decks. This individual will also lend their talents to special projects intended to round out their skillset and further their development as a marketing communications professional in healthcare, education, and beyond.

This role attends and contributes to weekly editorial planning meetings by pitching story ideas aligned to the Cancer Center’s Strategic Plan and with a focus on the advancement of cancer discovery and innovation at MCW. Duties include following up on internal news requests and promising story leads, and bringing back data, context, and information to the team to influence messaging and everyday editorial decisions. Additionally, the Communications Consultant will play a key role in enhancing content and engagement strategies for the overarching digital ecosystem.

Primary Functions:

  • Seek out and write stories that promote the mission, vision, culture, and priorities of the MCW Cancer Center, in collaboration with the Cancer Center communications team and MCW Office of Communications.
  • Write, edit, and produce content for email newsletters, intranet and external website, magazine publications, and social media content, under the direction of the current editor, to be reviewed and approved by key stakeholders.
  • Support management and updates of internal and external websites (intranet and MCW Cancer Center Website).
  • Develops and implements communication strategies, content campaigns and plans for less complex initiatives and projects.
  • Work independently to identify and gather information with leaders; consult on communications approaches; write and edit for engagement; and ensure that messaging supports the institution's core values and advances strategic objectives.
  • Support the maintenance of distribution lists, the publishing process for Cancer Center newsletters, and day-to-day updates to the intranet and external websites.
  • Collect, analyze, and disseminate communications data. Report communications data and progress to department stakeholders including the Director of Cancer Center Communications and other senior leaders.
  • Ensure that assigned projects and deliverables are high-quality, completed on time and reflect the input of identified reviewers.
  • Assure compliance with regulatory and institutional policies.

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis.

  • Minimum Required Education: Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum Required Experience: 5 years
  • Preferred Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field.
  • Preferred Experience: At least 5 years of experience in corporate communications, public relations, agency, marketing, or related communication field. Field: Communication, journalism, marketing, or related field
