SUMMARY OF JOB SCOPE & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Communications Coordinator manages daily communications and promotions that help the museum achieve its marketing goals, including increasing attendance and revenue. This position provides assistance where needed to the Director of Marketing & Communications. Successful candidate will have a passion for language, social media and the mission of Madison Children’s Museum.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

In conjunction with Marketing Director, helps create overall MCM marketing plan and marketing campaigns to promote events and activities of departments in order to meet or exceed goals, such as attendance and revenue.

Oversees execution of daily marketing and communications work (75%)

  • Oversees some marketing intake meetings to understand client (other MCM staff or partners) goals and plan strategies and tactics to reach those goals. 
  • Manages museum website and events calendar, including writing, editing, updating, managing photos and other images. 
  • Manages museum’s email marketing program, including monthly enews and emails to segmented audiences, such as Adult Swim (21+ evening parties), the Annual Benefit Sale, and members. 
  • Responsible for writing, editing, proofing, and following best practices for layout and copy. 
  • Works with graphic designer to create attractive, effective emails. 
  • Manages museum’s social media campaigns and channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, TripAdvisor, Yelp and the MCM Blog. 
  • Manages the museum’s Google AdWords account. 
  • Is a prime user and manager of museum’s project management software (currently Teamwork) to organize work and tasks. 
  • Helps train other staff in its use. 
  • Responds to external comments and questions via email and social media. 
  • Helps the Marketing Director with media outreach and advertising as needed. 
  • Helps write creative copy as needed. 
  • Serves as a writer, editor and proofreader for MCM staff.

Helps staff museum and outreach events. (10%)

  • Attends events such as fundraisers in the museum, Adult Swims, outreaches and expos in order to help promote the museum. 
  • Represents the museum in a friendly, professional, and informed manner. 
  • Helps update, prepare, and set up museum’s outreach materials, such as expo displays. 

Helps track Key Performance Indicators to measure progress, understand trends, and evaluate marketing strategies and tactics. (10%)

  • Tracks web statistics using Google Analytics. 
  • Helps prepare general evaluation and marketing reports to hone advertising and promotion effectiveness and efficiency. 
  • Helps prepare reports and materials for Marketing Committee and board meetings. 
  • Attends Marketing Committee meetings. 

Researches trends and tools in marketing to keep marketing team current, effective and efficient. (5%)

  • Researches best and promising practices from the field. 
  • Finds and attends professional development opportunities as budget allows.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • BA in marketing or other relevant field 

Required Skills:

  • Strong writing and editing—familiarity with editing to style. 
  • Expertise working in a marketing context with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media channels. 
  • Familiarity with an email program such as Constant Contact. 
  • Familiarity working with WordPress for web management and basic familiarity with html. 
  • Ability to organize and track projects and workflow. 
  • Excellent customer service skills. Must have strong organization skills and the ability to complete tasks on deadline. 
  • Ability to perform work accurately, with high attention to detail. 
  • Must be able to work independently. 
  • Excellent problem-solving and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Publicity management. 
  • Management and presentation of data. 
  • Ability to use graphic design tools, such as InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

Other Job Requirements:

  • Must be available to work occasional nights and weekends. 
  • Requires understanding of and respect for diversity.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position requires the ability to do one or more of the following throughout the day: stand, walk, sit, bend and reach above and below shoulder level. The position involves frequent repetitive motion (typing, filing, etc.). The noise level in the work environment is variable and unpredictable, ranging from quiet to loud.
