The Saint Paul Downtown Alliance is a nonprofit coalition of civic, business, and public-sector leaders dedicated to driving vitality and investment in downtown Saint Paul. We oversee the Saint Paul Downtown Improvement District, a $3.5M annual initiative focused on keeping downtown safe, clean and welcoming, and we lead real estate redevelopment efforts through the Saint Paul Downtown Development Corporation. From placemaking and public space activations to economic strategy and policy advocacy, we’re focused on making downtown Saint Paul more connected, inclusive, and alive with energy.

You’ll report directly to the President of the Downtown Alliance and serve the communications needs of the Alliance and its subsidiaries — the Improvement District and the Development Corporation. This role is all about momentum: crafting and delivering a forward-looking message that builds confidence and enthusiasm for downtown’s future.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead communications strategy that frames challenges as opportunities and highlights transformation in action
  • Manage external PR and marketing firms to ensure messaging is bold, unified, and strategic
  • Tell the story of our work, crafting compelling narratives around:
    • Safe & Clean programs
    • Placemaking and activations
    • Real estate and redevelopment (Downtown Development Corp)
  • Plan and execute a quarterly event to energize stakeholders and showcase progress
  • Utilize available research platforms to find key data points that underscore the message

Who We’re Looking For:

  • A creative thinker and proactive doer. Someone who brings bold ideas to the table and has the drive to turn them into real, visible results
  • Confident working with diverse audiences — from CEOs and investors to elected officials, public agencies, and neighborhood leaders
  • 7+ years of communications or public affairs experience
  • Strong writing, messaging, and media relations skills
  • Assertive, self-directed, and driven by optimism
  • Experienced in vendor and project management
  • Bonus if you’ve worked in urban development, public-private partnerships, or journalism where you have had to make complex stories simple, relatable, exciting, and inspiring!

Compensation:

This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary range of $90,000 to $110,000, depending on experience and qualifications. The Saint Paul Downtown Alliance also offers a competitive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement contributions, generous paid time off, and flexible hybrid work arrangements.
