Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Communications Director and Communications Manager, the Communications Intern will work on various communications and marketing projects for the Forest Preserve District of Cook County (“District”) including, but not limited to, writing content for the monthly newsletter, website, marketing materials, social media, and other outlets; photography, managing social media; research, and assisting in organizing internal documents and files.

This is a seasonal position and the duration of this position is up to six (6) months.

Typical Duties:

  • Provides support to the Communications division of the Office of the General Superintendent 
  • Assists with updates to the District website 
  • Assists members of the press with requests for information 
  • Writes and copy/edits marketing materials 
  • Maintains publicity logs 
  • Administers social media accounts 
  • Maintains and updates databases and spreadsheets 
  • Takes photos and organizes photo files 
  • Receives direction from several sources and prioritizes assignments effectively. 
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be possess a bachelor’s degree or higher in journalism, marketing, communications, public relations, advertising, or substantially similar discipline from an accredited college or university, OR; currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree and have a minimum of 15 credit hours of class instruction in journalism, marketing, communications, public relations, advertising or a substantially similar discipline at an accredited college or university.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Ability to work up to 20 hours per week, typically a set schedule with some flexibility requested. 
  • Excellent writing and communication skills. 
  • Ability to initiate and follow through with projects under own initiative
  • Capacity to work at times under a tight deadline structure. 
  • Understanding of social media. 
  • Eagerness to learn. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of District information.

Posting Salary: $14.00 Hourly
