Overview:

The Communications Specialist for Media Relations is a skilled and strategic public relations professional who thrives in a fast-paced, changing environment and enjoys working with the media and internal stakeholders to tell stories.

Working as part of a dynamic and driven media relations team, the specialist will execute a wide variety of tactics to champion one of Minnesota’s largest healthcare systems, including an academic medical center and a nationally recognized children’s hospital.

The specialist is a sharp writer with critical thinking and strong attention to detail. The Communications Specialist is skilled at building relationships with members of the media, and networks across various departments of our organization. The Communications Specialist also coordinates media visits to many locations, and manages media tracking of outcomes data. The Communications Specialist loves learning and writing about diverse healthcare topics, is accustomed to multi-tasking, thrives under tight deadlines, and has an innate ability to convey information clearly to a public audience. This person is equally comfortable with basic photo and video skills.

M Health Fairview is a complex, matrixed organization with a wide variety of service lines, expertise, and communications needs. To be successful at this position, the Communications Specialist needs to bring a highly entrepreneurial attitude, the ability to connect dots across the organization quickly, and an ability to operate successful within ambiguous circumstances. The Communications Specialist – Media Relations is expected to:

  • Develop story ideas, coordinate with subject matter experts, write compelling pitches, and work with the reporter and interviewee 
  • Collaborate across departments to develop strategic communications plans using consistent processes, templates and execution tools 
  • Stay up to date on the latest trends in healthcare and local news of the day 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with media contacts 
  • Staff media interviews and photographer visits at our many hospitals and clinics 
  • Manage the media relations phone line and voicemail 
  • Lead media monitoring and reporting efforts that include daily media reports, quarterly earned and digital media reporting, and ongoing reporting needs as required and as necessary. 
  • Ongoing management of media contacts lists 
  • Help in the creation and support of M Health Fairview’s earned media strategies and those of our internal stakeholders 
  • Draft press releases, blog articles and internal stories 
  • Take quality photos and video

Required:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field

Experience:

  • Three to five years of experience in strategic/corporate communications, public affairs, agencies, or related field.

Preferred Experience:

  • Working in a highly diverse, 10,000+ employee organizations with multiple locations.
  • Corporate communications and healthcare experience
  • Strong interviewing and information gathering skills
  • Comfort working with C-suite leadership to advance strategic communications priorities
