As the oversight agency for the three transit Service Boards that provide two million daily rides throughout the six‐county region, the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) believes successful communications are essential to build and sustain support for public transportation.

Under the direction of the Director, Marketing and Communications, the incumbent will have responsibility for communicating the agency’s external and internal messages, which inform diverse audiences that include riders, partners and employees. The position will generally provide communications support for agency projects, programs, activities and presentations and work collaboratively with the Digital Communications and Marketing Manager, Visual Communications Coordinator, Service Boards and external partners to promote transit use in the RTA region and the role and function of the RTA.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensures the quality of highly visible RTA content, including the agency website, blog, press materials, reports, and other significant publications. Uses social media and e‐newsletters to amplify agency messages. 
  • Works closely with the Director and acts as a secondary media contact while also coordinating press conferences and other special events. Helps to generate and monitor media coverage. Responds to public requests for information. 
  • Writes, edits, and reviews various publications for internal and external audiences. Helps develop and maintain consistency of agency messaging across all platforms. Works collaboratively with RTA staff and external partners to create content that accurately and persuasively conveys the regional importance of public transportation. 
  • Communicates with professional counterparts at the Service Boards to ensure message consistency. Builds relationships with other transportation organizations, advocacy organizations, community organizations and other stakeholders to disseminate our message.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications or a related field or equivalent work experience. Transit experience preferred. Urban planning, land use, or public policy/public administration background helpful. At least three (3) years’ experience in public‐ or private‐sector communications, preferably with media relations responsibilities including press materials and events. Must write clearly and concisely for diverse audiences. Knowledge of Chicago and AP style, with strong skills in proofreading, editing, and overall quality control. Mastery of Microsoft Word and familiarity with other Microsoft Office applications are required. Familiarity with InDesign and Photoshop is a plus. Experience developing and executing social media strategy. Experience using a web content management system, including competence with simple HTML, a basic feel for good typography and design, and experience working with designers and web front‐ and back‐end developers. 

Salary Range: $70,000 to $80,000.

The RTA offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. The RTA reimburses for travel at the federal rate for mileage reimbursement. Relocation is not available.
