The Communications Specialist will help showcase WEI research and outreach programs through written, visual, and online content and communications projects targeting multiple audiences. The communication materials and events developed by this position will be utilized to inform scientists, educators, policy makers, students, media, and the general public about the vision, goals, and research endeavors of the WEI. As a communicator at the WEI, the incumbent will be at the front of cutting-edge energy research - a field with important stories to tell to many different audiences.

Primary responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conceptualizing, developing, and coordinating effective communications projects that support the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of the WEI.
  • Designing and producing scientific and operational graphics, posters, presentations, reports, templates, and other collateral for WEI staff and researchers.
  • Producing video, audio, and visual website content using a variety of storytelling platforms.
  • Providing writing, copyediting, and proofing for communications and marketing materials. Examples include: feature stories, news releases, media advisories, annual reports, e-newsletters, online content, pamphlets, posters, presentations, brochures, advertisements, and other collateral materials, including those that promote workshops, seminars, energy research, and associated programs. Projects that may require the ability to translate scientific research into compelling stories that are accessible to non-scientists.
  • Supporting the Institute's internal and external communication platforms including websites, newsletters, and social media channels by posting and maintaining written and visual content, and providing web design and development.
  • Monitoring energy-related media and identifying and executing on opportunities to showcase energy research and activities on campus including feature stories, award applications, media coverage, conferences, and journals.
  • Tracking and highlighting media coverage, researcher awards, patents, etc.
  • Providing editorial and/or staffing support for various college events, including innovation competitions, workshops and conferences.
  • Responding to information requests from campus communicators, journalists, and others to maximize the impact of WEI.
  • Providing external relations support to researchers, staff, and educators who interact with WEI stakeholders, including non-scientific audiences.
  • Regularly evaluating website traffic and the effectiveness of communications tools and materials and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Working on other communications projects as assigned.

Degree and area of specialization:

BS or BA in communication, education and/or science.  Emphasis on science preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Experience in multimedia storytelling, graphic design, web design, and/or producing content for promotional and informational purposes.  Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite is required.  A demonstrated ability to translate science for general audiences is essential.  Experience in online journalism and/or higher education and university communication is desirable.

Must have strong interpersonal and organizational skills, attention to detail, a willingness to collaborate across teams, and an ability to independently manage and execute a project.

Compensation is negotiable, depending on qualifications.
