Kalmbach Media is currently seeking a Copy Editor for its two science brands: Discover and Astronomy. These award-winning national science brands are based in our Waukesha office. The Copy Editor is responsible for maintaining style and accuracy for all editorial content across a variety of departments, features and related content in support of the Discover and Astronomy brands. The position also involves coordinating fact-checking for Discover.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews all editorial content at multiple points in the copy flow process ' from text files to layouts ' verifying use of correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and magazine style. 
  • Reviews all editorial content for logic, structure and overall readability. 
  • Coordinates fact-checking for Discover stories, serving as primary contact for all freelance fact-checkers. 
  • Contributes to development of story headlines, decks, subheads and other display copy. 
  • Performs some fact-checking duties in-house. 
  • Meets all deadlines.
  • At least three years' experience in copy editing at magazines, newspapers and/or digital media outlets, with excellent critical-thinking skills, as well as solid organizational and overall editing skills. 
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, English or a related field. 
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work well on a team.
