Marquette University is looking to add a Copy Editor to the Marketing and Communications team.  The Copy Editor will provide copy-editing, proofreading and writing support for the university on a high volume of print, interactive, multimedia projects and publications. Additionally, this position monitors the university website and provides regularly scheduled updates to incorporate new and missing information that is relevant to Marquette audiences.

Responsibilities include:

  1. The copy editor will review and copy-edit marketing collateral, publications, interactive communication material and video produced by the Office of Marketing and Communication for appropriate messaging, organization and quality.
  2. The copy editor works closely with the Editorial, Brand Marketing, and Digital teams and with freelance partners as the internal consultant on AP and university style.
  3. The copy editor reviews material created for all formats to correct errors in grammar, spelling, usage and style for consistency in how words, phrases, typographical elements, etc., are used and for adherence with university style.
  4. The copy editor will ensure messaging is accurate, grammatically correct and consistent across platforms.
  5. The copy editor is responsible for ensuring that messaging and organization of marketing collateral, interactive and multimedia projects target the needs of the intended audience.
  6. The copy editor stays up to date with Marquette facts and figures and makes sure that all such institutional information on the university website and in publication is current and accurate. Monitor university news and events and maintain all institutional facts and figures on the university’s website.
  7. Serve as the internal expert on university style and standards.
  8. Train new staff and internal and external clients on university style and messaging.
  9. Provide excellent customer service to various contacts on campus as their projects flow through the Office of Marketing and Communication production process.
  10. Collaborate with creative team to review and improve existing content.
  11. The copy editor is responsible for maintaining a schedule for regularly reviewing and updating the university website and making sure content in interactive and print formats is consistent.
  12. Collaborate on publication editorial planning and execution: The copy editor will work in an editorial capacity – or be assigned writing assignments – for university publications. This work will include content planning, coordination with writers, conducting interviews and drafting content to assigned word count.
  13. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.

The qualified candidate will possess the following attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, advertising or a related field. Copy editor will have 3-5 years of experience in a communication, advertising or marketing role – either as staff or in freelance capacity.
  • Candidate will demonstrate an ability to work in a team environment, collaborate with creative team and provide excellent customer service.
  • Copy editor will have the strong organizational skills needed for quick turnarounds and frequent periods of high volume.
  • Candidate will have a proven record of copy editing a variety of marketing materials. Must be extremely detail-oriented, possess a thorough knowledge of the English language and AP Style and be able to work to deadlines on several tasks at any one time.
  • Copy editor will demonstrate an understanding of production process and have the ability to understand and maintain production schedules, track deliverables, problem solve and escalate issues as appropriate.
  • Copy editor will demonstrate strong computer skills, especially in Microsoft Word and Adobe Creative Suite. Proficiency with PowerPoint is a plus.
