As a copywriter, you are an integral member of the UnitedHealth Group R&D team responsible for developing the next wave of game-changing healthcare technologies and programs. However, excellent research is valuable only if we can communicate what we’ve learned and convince others to get involved in our programs and services. That’s where you come in. We need you to help us ensure that every document meets the highest standards in quality of thought, clarity of expression, and efficacy of call to action. One of our biggest focuses is trying to make people healthier. We write about programs with clinical interventions, we try to change unhealthy behaviors into healthy ones, and we try and get people to adopt new technologies that will help them improve their health. These are difficult tasks that require excellent copywriting. You need to be able to write copy that knocks people’s socks off. And then more copy that convinces them to pick those socks up off the floor. If you can get someone to fold them nicely too, then you’re the perfect writer for this job.

Types of writing include direct mail, email writing, call scripts and video scripts, instruction guides, web copy, and surveys. Menu subject to change without notice, and you’ll need to change right along with it.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with researchers to clarify and transform their ideas into persuasive, conversational messages that resonate with audiences (e.g., patients or people from all walks of life) 
  • Work with our team of writers, program managers, and designers to produce writing of various styles, depending on the research need 
  • Serve as a creative problem-solving resource as needed 
  • Help manage workflow for the copywriting team and provide mentorship to other team members

Desired Skills and Attributes:

Candidates for this position should:

  • Write in a way that is clear, concise, compelling, and consumer-focused 
  • Be able to move fast and change directions quickly; have about you a certain “Why not?”-ness 
  • Be inquisitive - the first person to say “This might be a stupid question, but…” 
  • Understand what makes different people tick and have the creative chops to produce messages and strategies to reach them 
  • Be a team player while working in a collaborative and friendly environment 
  • Be proactive in reaching out to colleagues to accomplish assigned tasks 
  • Respond constructively to direction and feedback 
  • Consistently meet deadlines 
  • Be skilled at multi-tasking, prioritizing work, and serving as a project manager 
  • Be able to create repeatable processes where possible 
  • Be able and willing to write in the appropriate voice for the task

Required Qualifications:

  • BA or BS in English, communications, or marketing 
  • 5+ years of experience in copywriting, marketing, or advertising 
  • Two Copywriting samples to submit as attachments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in user experience (UI/UX), email marketing, and web advertising campaigns 
  • Background knowledge of business and the US healthcare industry 
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Visio
