As a vital member of the Corporate Communications team, the Digital Content Manager develops and delivers key messages to our target audience of customers and shareholders across multiple digital platforms. The utility industry is complex and changing—providing opportunities to develop messages and communication plans covering a wide range of topics and products/services from electric vehicles to renewable energy. This position allows you to tap your creativity for MGE's innovative projects and to use your writing/editing skills and User Experience (UX) expertise to deliver engaging content and meaningful information to our customers and shareholders.

The Digital Content Manager helps develop strategic communication plans and writes Company communications with a particular emphasis on web and mobile communications. The position works on special projects, web writing and content management, graphic ideas, and customer and shareholder communication pieces. A majority of the work is writing and the strategic use of communication platforms. In addition, this cross-functional position plays a key role working with MGE's Digital Experience and Marketing departments. The position will report to the Director of the Corporate Communications department.

Communications Projects and Plans

  • Partners with Company leaders and employee teams to form executable communication plans that deliver key messages to our target audience and to identify opportunities for cross-promotion across multiple platforms.
  • Helps manage communication projects from concept to completion to support important business initiatives and achieve project or program goals and objectives.
  • Builds and fosters collaborative relationships to stay informed about the Company's new initiatives and products and services to proactively plan and meet those respective communication needs.
  • Writes and edits corporate communications for a variety of platforms to reach our target audience on wide-ranging topics.

Online Content Strategy and UX

  • Assists in developing and managing content for MGE's external websites, in collaboration with MGE's Digital Experience team, to enhance the UX.
  • Handles monthly plans for home page features and other content.
  • Writes new, engaging, and customer-focused content and edits existing content.
  • Coordinates visual content in collaboration with MGE's Visual Brand Manager and Digital Experience team (graphics, photos, video, maps, etc.).
  • Maintains MGE's brand across all Company websites.
  • Works closely with MGE's Digital Experience team to evaluate web traffic analytics and archive necessary web-based information for future needs and reference.

New Initiatives and Guidance

  • Provides strategic guidance on web/mobile content and trends, and integration of web/social media/print.
  • Participates in project teams when developing new web applications for customers and shareholders.
  • Partners with other departments for web content related to special projects such as new marketing initiatives, rate cases, business initiatives, existing programs, etc.
  • Participates in web usability sessions.

Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in journalism, communications, or related area.
  • Five to seven years of significant experience in corporate communications, public relations, and marketing with a strong emphasis on working across multiple digital platforms.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in web writing and UX and knowledge of graphic design.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent project management skills with an ability to manage and coordinate a number of high-visibility projects and meet strict timelines while maintaining quality and design integrity.
  • Able to strategically develop a communication plan from inception to completion.
  • Strong journalistic, deadline-oriented writing skills with an emphasis on accuracy, integrity of the brand, and focus on the customer/user.
  • Able to understand, interpret, and write accurately and quickly about complex information, including issues that can potentially face a highly regulated and publicly held company.
  • Strong editing skills and rigorous attention to accuracy, detail, and quality.
  • Able to understand and meet the needs of our diverse customer base. Fluency in Spanish a plus.
  • Excellent web content management skills and experience using a Content Management System (CMS).
  • Knowledge of how to use search engine optimization tactics.
  • Knowledge of emerging web technologies.
  • Able to understand financial, legal, and regulatory matters.
  • Experience writing for a publicly traded company and knowledge of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and financial matters.
  • Have a service-oriented, collaborative approach. Strong business acumen; a true interest in the utility business; and a flexible, can-do attitude.
  • Experience with Adobe and InDesign, MS Office Applications including Microsoft 365 and SharePoint Online, and Kentico CMS a plus.
