A nationally acclaimed visual and performing arts complex in downtown Sheboygan, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center is devoted to innovative explorations in contemporary art. Central to its mission is promoting an understanding and appreciation of the work of self-taught and contemporary artists through original exhibitions, commissioned works of art, performing arts programming, community arts initiatives, and publications. The Arts Center’s collections focus primarily on works by environment builders, self-taught and folk artists, and works created in the Arts/Industry residency program. The 100,000-square-foot Arts Center comprises ten galleries, a flexible performance space, studio-classrooms, meeting spaces, SHOP, and CAFE. In 2021, The Arts Center opened the Art Preserve building which is the first space of its kind for the presentation of a permanent collection specifically focused on artist-built environments. The Arts Center also has an adjunct site: ARTspace, an exhibition space and shop in The Shops at Woodlake in Kohler Village.

Are you a passionate, organized, and detail-oriented individual with an interest in Marketing, Social Media, and database management?

We are looking for a Digital Marketing & Membership Specialist, responsible for crafting and sharing meaningful and engaging digital content through thoughtful and strategic planning, coordination, execution, and evaluation of the Arts Center’s digital marketing platforms. This will include posting/promoting various social media channels, Google Adword Management, SEO & SEM Management, banner ad execution and follow-up, online reputation management and maintenance, and reporting key performance indicators.

The Digital Marketing & Membership Specialist will also be responsible for all aspects of membership, from serving as the first point of contact for membership-related questions, to supporting member events, to recruiting new Friend and Explorer level members. The role will also be responsible for maintaining records, tracking figures, and coordinating with the accounting department regarding the payment and processing of member and contributing member revenue.

  1. Craft/write/develop all messaging and content shared on digital platforms in accordance with JMKAC brand and Chicago Manual of Style guides. 
  2. Attend departmental meetings in-person and online to develop content. 
  3. Respond to all questions, information requests, and complaints regarding membership and process membership applications, renewals, and resignations. 
  4. Develop and implement strategies to recruit new and retain existing Friend and Explorer level members. 
  5. Lead the development and execution of organization-wide digital marketing strategy and seasonal campaigns including content creation, planning, and scheduling, of all JMKAC digital marketing platforms (social, Google Adwords, web optimization, geocaching, retargeting, video marketing, etc.) to increase engagement, visibility, and local/national awareness of the Arts Center programming. 
  6. Maintain and update membership records and collect data, track statistics, and prepare membership reports. 
  7. Attend JMKAC events (days, nights, weekends) to photograph and write content for social media channels, as well as steward existing and cultivating/soliciting prospective members. 
  8. Monitor platforms for analytics and reputation management including Google, BING, Travel Pages, Next Door, and Social Media platforms. 
  9. Research and learn industry best practices to keep digital platforms relevant and effective. Assist with all aspects of direct member communication activities and partner in the development and distribution of membership marketing/solicitation materials. 
  10. Perform other administrative duties as assigned.  

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s and/or Associates degree in communication, social media, journalism, public relations, marketing, or liberal arts preferred. 
  • 2 years of progressive experience with digital content writing and development, working in the digital marketing/social media space; and designing/editing for web-based media; fundraising, member management, sales, recruitment, or customer service. 
  • Advanced to intermediate proficiency in the following: MS Office 360, Hootsuite, web-based customer relationship management software (Salesforce, Blackbaud, etc.), Adobe Creative Suite, email marketing platform/s, Google Analytics, social media analytic areas, CRM platform/s, and basic HTML a plus but not necessary. 
  • 1 year photography and/or digital photography experience is a plus. 
  • Prior arts organization experience a plus.

The position is office/art gallery based and noise level usually moderate. May occasionally work inside or outside at events where noise level could be moderate to loud. Hours of work include daytime and some evening hours Monday – Friday, occasionally working evenings and weekends.
