United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM)

The mission of the United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee is to strengthen city neighborhoods by combining and enhancing the assets of our partner agencies to improve the quality of life for urban families.

UNCOM member agencies include: 1) Neighborhood House of Milwaukee; 2) Silver Spring Neighborhood Center; 3) Agape Community Center; 4) COA Youth & Family Centers,; 5) Northcott Neighborhood House; 6) Next Door Foundation; 7) Journey House; and 8) Milwaukee Christian Center.

Collectively, these agencies have 36 locations, 500 staff and 1,000 volunteers, and serve over 55,000 families annually. Each agency is an independent 501(c) (3) and provides a comprehensive array of programs uniquely tailored to the needs of its surrounding neighborhood and residents. All agencies have diverse staffs and volunteer boards that reflect the demographics of the community served. Most were founded by faith communities on Jane Addams' settlement house philosophy, and two are still officially affiliated with religious organizations.

UNCOM manages a year-round job program for youth at all UNCOM agencies, is an operating partner of the Zilber Neighborhood Initiative, partners with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundations' Healthy Kids Healthy Communities project to present the Milwaukee Childhood Obesity Prevention Project, recently became a community partner in the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Violence Prevention Initiative and has developed its own integrated data system.

United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM)is seeking a Director, Development. The position serves as the chief fundraising and fund development officer for the organization.

KEY OUTCOMES:

  • Leads UNCOM fund development by promoting its mission, vision and programs.
  • Identifies and executes funding strategies that sustains UNCOM’s long-term sustainability.
  • Oversees all aspects of fund development including prospecting and working with stakeholders to develop funding for existing and future programming.
  • Directs assessment of UNCOM’s fundraising infrastructure and builds organizational capacity through relationship management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned based on the individual’s qualifications and experiences.

1) Serves as UNCOM’s Chief Funding Officer

Fund Development

  • Builds and develops relationship with foundation, corporate leaders and donors.
  • Conducts research on potential funding sources.
  • Writes and submits grant proposals to governmental agencies, foundations, corporate and business sources and conducts appropriate follow-up.
  • Advises Executive Director on key funding opportunities and strategies to obtain funding.

Public Relations

  • Champions UNCOM mission and vision.
  • Communicates UNCOM culture, goals, outcomes, strategic plan, and news to broader community.
  • Advocates on behalf of interests of UNCOM as appropriate.
  • Serves as a representative and spokesperson for UNCOM in the community.
  • Attends and participates in policy forums, committees, community meetings, and public events, as required.

Development and Reporting

  • Develops infrastructure to measure UNCOM fundraising program performance.
  • Ability to work directly, build strong relationships and communicate with Executive Director, UNCOM member agencies, stakeholders and funded partners.
  • Provides active support to appropriate board committees and affinity groups.
  • Presents timely quantitative and qualitative reports to the executive director and Board on status of UNCOM fundraising activities and projected needs.

2) Directs funding infrastructure and capacity building

  • Develop infrastructure to measure UNCOM fundraising program performance.
  • Organize the data collection and planning process for funding opportunities and integrate existing and future best practices for day-to-day funding work while implementing recommendations resulting from those plans.
  • Assess existing programs within UNCOM to determine their current capacity for additional funding and sustainability design.
  • Research and write proposals for the increasing capacity of the UNCOM Database System.
  • Leverages new resources for UNCOM and its existing funding partners including: Zilber Neighborhood Initiative (ZNI), the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board and others as defines.
  • Work with ZNI partners to develop capacity building funding in relationship to neighborhood program design and move them to implementation.
  • Participate in the preparation of reports as required by funding sources and other funding partners.
  • Coordinate UNCOM-related communication and public relations plans.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • College degree required. Advanced graduate degree preferred in business administration, community development, communications, urban planning, urban educational administrative leadership or social work.
  • Minimum of five years experience in a research, consulting, or management position in a nonprofit, government, institution of higher learning, or other relevant corporate setting.
  • Proven track record in designing, implementing, and evaluating fund develop for urban education, social, housing, economic development, or other related programs.
  • Ability to flawlessly communicate through excellent oral and written communication skills. This includes strong skills in proof-reading and editing.
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative and qualitative evaluation and assessment of programs and building organizational capacity.
  • Excellent time management capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of social media and how to leverage tools for fund development.
  • Ability to take direction from the Executive Director and to delegate tasks as appropriate.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Proven success in fundraising and grant writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by actively engaging, developing and consulting teams in diverse settings.
  • Experience working with political, government and community stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of non-profit functions and capacity building strategies.
  • Resourceful, creative, innovative, flexible, ability to work without direct supervision and with limited resources.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications [Word, Excel, PowerPoint], database and Internet.
  • Ability to adjust to crisis situations, motivate others, and utilize effective listening skills.
  • An enthusiasm to stay current with community development, non-profit, human services, youth leadership, and community organizing innovations and best practices.
  • Valid state issued drivers license.
  • Ability to lift fifty pounds and work in a professional office setting.
