We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Director Employee Communications on our Enterprise Communications team. This position can be hybrid (working from both office and home), with a schedule to be determined by business needs.

As a Director Employee Communications you will serve as a primary strategist for communicating with and engaging AMA’s employees. Working closely with HR, IT, Finance and other core AMA business units, this role helps shape execution of internal efforts and events, and leads planning to connect, engage and inform employees on the programs and information they need to shape their experience at the AMA. This role helps business leaders and subject matter experts communicate their perspectives, results, and goals with the entire enterprise, while ensuring alignment with the AMA’s strategic goals and weaving the AMA enterprise narrative into the messages. Responsible for building the strategy and developing the editorial and programming content to improve communications and to strengthen AMA’s connection with its employees.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee internal communication editorial channels

  • Continuously evolves the editorial approach of internal communications to ensure that employees understand AMA’s strategic work and priorities 
  • Ensure that AMA’s narrative is embedded into cross-enterprise AMA communications initiatives; facilitate and develop the authentic voice of AMA’s leaders via internal channels 
  • Oversee and enhance the tools and channels utilized for internal communications, including the intranet, digital newsletter, digital signs, events, social sharing tools, training programs; measures channel performance and evolving the channels, enterprise resources, and priorities 
  • Lead platform development strategy for AMAtoday, troubleshoot and support the business strategy of our internal communication channels; evaluate and select tools for internal communications 
  • Advise AMA leaders on communications strategy and develop messages and materials for internal leaders 
  • Lead development of AMA’s frontline communicator program; maintain spokesperson material and facilitate experiential training for these employees -- identifying and driving forward opportunities to tell AMA’s stories 

Internal collaboration

  • Prioritize enterprise-wide collaboration through two-way communications, identifying ways to tell stories of the people and teams who help the AMA lead the national conversation on health care 
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders such as HR and IT business partners to support critical programs, policies, and strategy of the organization; responsible for creating communications plans to share such internal information with employees 
  • Collaborate with representatives from all AMA business units to create cohesive, clear and inclusive communications from concept to completion 
  • Plan and coordinate enterprise-wide events including annual all-employee town hall, employee appreciation day, and other events hosted by the CEO, SMG-level leadership, HR and EC

Strategically pursue employee engagement

  • Design, implement and measure a strategy to increase employee communications and engagement; influencing and emphasizing an environment where employees can feel both connected to and informed about the AMA 
  • Identify and execute a roadmap of internal programmatic efforts that seek or create opportunities to meaningfully connect employees with one another and AMA’s strategic work, values, and mission

Staff management & administration

  • Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for professional staff; identify opportunities for advancing staff skills and expertise 
  • Lead internal emergency communications response to all employees via AMA’s emergency alert tool

May include other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or comparable required; Master's Degree in communications, management and/or journalism preferred 
  2. Minimum 10 years of experience in employee communications and engagement – specifically defining and executing a strategic roadmap and in developing, managing, and measuring the impact of communications and engagement strategies; health care sector experience preferred 
  3. Minimum 5 years of experience in people management with a demonstrated record of success 
  4. Functional knowledge of Sharepoint 365 and Salesforce as platform channels for content creation and distribution 
  5. Experience working collaboratively across a matrixed organization and managing multi-stakeholder programs 
  6. Outstanding problem-solving skills and demonstrated project management skills required; experience managing and prioritizing multiple, complex tasks and responsibilities 
  7. Experience producing and incorporating multi-media content, including video into editorial content 
  8. Polished interpersonal, consensus-building, and negotiation skills 
  9. Expert-level written and verbal communication skills, including experience and comfort presenting or facilitating in a large group setting 
  10. Some travel required
