This position is based out of Feeding America’s new office location in the heart of downtown Chicago. At Feeding America, we believe in offering a flexible work environment. Employees can be in the office an average of 2-3 days a week (when not travelling for work) and work from home on other days. Employees also have access to a 30-day “work anywhere” program during the course of each calendar year that can be combined with PTO and/or holidays.

The Opportunity

The Director, Executive Communication serves as a primary communications partner for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) helping to support and leverage the CEO’s voice as part of the Feeding America’s overarching communications strategy. This role collaborates with internal partners on thought-leadership strategies, co-creates plans and content deliverables in partnership with executives, and provides communications counsel to subject matter experts as needed. As part of the communication team, this position works closely with colleagues to ensure that messages and content are fully aligned with broader communications strategy and media plans.

Responsibilities:

  • Working directly with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), provides communication support and coordinates content development including proposing outlines, curating talking points, verifying data, gathering industry trends and other compelling content that best leverages the CEO’s voice for use in written or verbal narrative development that ladders into the organization’s overarching communication strategy. 
  • Collaborates with colleagues on the communication team and works closely with members of the development and strategic partnerships teams as well as cross-functionally across the organization to implement communication strategies that utilizes the CEO’s voice to its highest and best use on behalf of the people we serve. 
  • Supports the CEO in preparation for speaking engagements and anticipates, evaluates, prioritizes, and presents all communication opportunities for review based on the upcoming calendar. Coordinates associated logistics and follows up with external contacts for speaking engagements as necessary. 
  • Works closely with the internal communication, network communication and human resources teams to ensure that the messaging and announcements are aligned with the overarching communication strategy and the organization’s language and style guidance. 
  • Identifies opportunities for how CEO voice may translate to social media or other channels in conjunction with the overarching communications strategy. 
  • Fosters a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion through all internal and external interactions. Communicates directly and always represents the CEO and organization in a professional manner. Maintainspositive relationships, ensuring stakeholders feel valued and are heard. 
  • Supports CEO engagement and presence at Feeding America conferences through service on the conference planning team and on-site support. 
  • Develops and maintains thematic-based content archive for communication team’s reference. 
  • Builds a communication resource infrastructure that helps enhance the identity and communication skills of the Executive Team and key subject matter experts across Feeding America. Provides communication counsel to the Executive Team members to support the execution of critical communications initiatives, such as participation in press events, keynote speeches with accompanying visuals, or bylined contributions. 
  • As a member of the communication team, regularly draws strategic connections and insights between content contribution, voice leveraging and sharing opportunities that would be best fulfilled by other individuals and presents those alternative recommendations to CEO—continuing to facilitate, as warranted. 
  • Understands Feeding America’s strategy and priorities, and for assigned projects writes, edits, and presents information in formats that are best suited to engage audiences.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of writing, editing experience working with C-Suite executives. This should include working with busy executives in a fast-paced environment and fluency in engaging with individuals with diplomacy and grace. 
  • Superb editing and proofing skills; excellent oral & written communication skills, preferably with an understanding of donor communities, employees, affiliated organizations, and senior management. 
  • Demonstrated skill at conveying complicated, nuanced information in easily digestible form to multiple audiences. 
  • Demonstrated project management skills with experience managing multiple projects involving internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Experience operating in stakeholder focused roles where balancing diverse needs and interests is critical to success. 
  • Proficient in MS Office.

Salary Range: $90,000 to $113,000+ Based on Experience
