GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) is a non-profit medical professional society of influential scientists, academicians, researchers, clinicians, government representatives, and industry leaders from around the world dedicated to improving cancer patient outcomes by advancing the science and application of cancer immunotherapy.

Reporting to the Society Associate Executive Director and working closely with the Society leadership and appropriate committees, the Director of Communications & Membership will set and guide the strategy for all Society communications to ensure that SITC is viewed as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information exchange within this diverse network and to the entire constituent base.

This position will also set and guide the strategy for the society Membership activities to ensure that SITC is viewed as the premier membership organization dedicated to the cancer immunotherapy field within this diverse network and to the entire constituent base both in the US and globally. The Director of Communications & Membership oversees and coordinates all staff functions of the Society’s communications & membership team. The director works closely with a senior peer group of directors in the overall management of the Society, including media and public relations, activity-related promotion and audience generation, branding and design, and corporate communications standards to consistently articulate the Society’s mission and key messaging.

In addition, the director will serve as the key communications and membership partner on a variety of strategic initiatives aimed at effectively articulating the Society’s scientific leadership in the field, contribution to policy and advocacy efforts, educational offerings and other resources to key audiences, including our membership, general public, potential donors, and collaborators.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop a comprehensive annual MarCom plan for the various society programs and initiatives to advance SITC’s interests in the areas of audience generation, membership recruitment, outreach activities, policy initiatives, scientific publications, and effective fundraising messaging. Includes identifying target audiences for variety of projects, events, and publications.
  • Develop a comprehensive annual Membership plan for the various society constituency groups and stakeholders in the cancer immunotherapy arena
  • Direct and oversee the development and management of detailed timelines, innovative tactics, defined budgets, key desired deliverables and specific metrics for evaluating success of campaign(s). Regularly report on these findings as well as make recommendations for short and long-term communications and membership strategy changes.
  • Effectively lead, mentor and oversee the communications and membership team. Direct and coordinate their efforts on behalf of the society and ensure cross-team implementation of key messaging in appropriate areas
  • Direct and oversee media relations strategies and tactics including development of appropriate campaigns, creation of press releases and press kits, media spokespeople training, pitching stories and building relationships with members of the media
  • Provide high-level writing and communications support with media responses, editorials, and interviews to the President, Board of Directors, Executive Staff and others
  • Develop and ensure the implementation of necessary corporate communications standards, communications procedures, policies and regulations for the society
  • Oversee the full spectrum of SITC’s digital communication outlets including websites, social media and other electronic communication platforms and oversee staff efforts in creation of content and updating of website, development and distribution of electronic newsletters, blogs, and utilization of other online tools, as needed
  • Propose and ensure implementation of effective membership-based policies, procedures and activities to continuously expand the membership base and improve the member experience
  • Oversee the implementation of the Society’s Annual Leadership Election and Annual Membership Business Meeting
  • Oversee membership-related functions including membership applications, maintaining membership records and database, data analysis, and report generation
  • Develop appropriate membership communications and activities to foster continued growth of the Society’s membership base and stakeholder groups
  • Develop volunteer recruitment and engagement practices to support Society growth and ensure compliance with policies, procedures and tracking (committee service)
  • Oversee the committee appointment process for standing and ad hoc committees, ensuring meaningful volunteer engagement opportunities, monitoring of existing appointments as well as determining when new opportunities may be warranted to meet an unmet need as well as identify appropriate ways to recognize volunteers for their efforts
  • Oversee exhibiting strategy for the organization including show selection and providing recommendations for staffing.
  • Serve as a staff liaison to appropriate SITC committees including management of outputs
  • Stay updated on new technologies, best practices and industry trends within areas of responsibility
  • Develop and monitor budgets as well as provide appropriate tracking and trending reports in areas of responsibility
  • Provide support to the Executive Director and Associate Executive Director as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in related field preferred
  • Requires outstanding organizational, time management, communication and accuracy skills
  • Prior experience working with volunteer-led organizations preferred
  • Previous association management experience and familiarity with nonprofit boards of directors a plus
  • Proficient in MS Office environment required and iMIS database experience preferred
  • A self-reliant, problem-solving, results-oriented individual who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical operations
  • Exceptional written, oral and interpersonal skills and the ability to work within a matrixed environment (with volunteer leaders, senior management and across departments)
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and timelines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to supervise staff effectively including appropriate coaching and mentoring

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Travel of up to 6 weeks per year
  • Some evening and weekend work as needed
  • Occasional lifting, up to 50 pounds
