The Director of Marketing and Communications plays a key role in helping us deliver on our mission by leading the development and execution of EFMN's marketing and communications strategy. This position oversees all aspects of marketing, digital strategy, media and public relations, brand management, and communications. Working closely with development, program, and enterprise teams, the Director brings stories to life, champions the EFMN brand, and guides a small team to deliver high-impact content to help achieve organizational goals. A key area of focus for this role is to increase awareness of EFMN for people with epilepsy and their circles of support. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy and Leadership - 35%

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications plan annually that aligns with organizational priorities.
  • Oversee brand management, messaging consistency and quality across all channels.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and leadership to align messaging and priorities across departments.
  • Provide strategic messaging, executive communications support and tailored talking points for Executive Director related to speaking engagements, media opportunities, policy and community events.
  • Partners with leadership to develop and implement crisis communication strategy to ensure compassionate, transparent, and mission-aligned messaging during incidents affecting the epilepsy community or organizational operations.
  • Lead planning, budgeting, and performance measurement of marketing and communications.
  • Monitor results on an ongoing basis and recommend adjustments when needed.
  • Management and leadership of team, including the establishment of roles and responsibilities.
  • Identify and assess the need for internal versus external resources to achieve goals.
  • Select, hire and manage the performance of external vendors, consultants, and contractors.

Advance Awareness and Visibility of EFMN - 30%

  • Lead digital strategy including SEO, paid advertising, and content marketing to raise epilepsy awareness and EFMN visibility
  • Manage website content, structure, and user experience to ensure accessibility, relevance, and effectiveness.
  • Direct social media strategy and execution to grow online presence and engagement.
  • Oversee multimedia content development (videos, blogs, graphics) to share personal stories, educational material, and advocacy messages.
  • Execute and contract public relations and media outreach efforts as needed.
  • Ensure all communications reflect inclusive, respectful, and mission-aligned messaging.

Marketing Support for Development, Programs, and Donated Goods Teams - 35%

  • Support development team to create and implement compelling fundraising campaigns and donor stewardship, providing marketing and communications expertise, recommendations and communications to help achieve goals.
  • Support Mission Outcomes program team to understand impact stories, community voices, and desired program outcomes, providing marketing and communications expertise, recommendations, and communications to help achieve goals.

  • Support Donated Goods to optimize solicitations for pickups and support other growth opportunities, providing marketing and communications expertise, recommendations, and communications to help achieve goals.
  • 5+ years of experience in marketing, strategic communications, or public relations, preferably in the nonprofit sector
  • Strategic thinker with demonstrated ability to collaborate with others to develop annual plans and achieve goals
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills
  • Strong knowledge of digital marketing tools, including email platforms, social media, paid advertising, SEO, and Google Analytics (Google Grant a plus)

  •  Experience managing website platforms (WordPress a plus) and CRM systems (Salesforce NPSP a plus)
