External Communications Senior Specialist

The External Communications Senior Specialist will support the external communications planning and execution for the company’s corporate initiatives, as well as for a variety of business teams including omnichannel; digital, analytics and technology; finance; HR; legal and more. This role will also support external communications for Best Buy Health, as needed.

This position will focus on providing media relations support for regional, national and trade PR activities, including building and maintaining relationships with reporters, editors, and producers to effectively pitch, manage and fulfill stories. This person will create strategic communication plans for a variety of projects and company initiatives, working directly with company leaders to advise, guide and execute external communications tactics throughout the process. This role will also be responsible for reporting research and results that help to inform and enhance external communications strategies. 

This role is designed to work in a hybrid model which would have individuals in the office on average 3 days per week. All applicants must live or be willing and able to relocate to a commutable distance to the corporate campus in Richfield, Minnesota.

What you’ll do:

  • Planning and execution of media relations strategies, including building media relationships with reporters, editors and producers. The role includes both proactive and reactive media relations with national, local and trade media outlets. 
  • Researching, developing and executing clear reporting of media coverage, macroeconomic trends and social media platforms that help to inform communication strategies and keep leaders aware of various topics that impact the business. 
  • Support external communications efforts for various business teams, including omnichannel; digital, analytics and technology, finance, HR, legal. Best Buy Health and more. 
  • Collaborate with business partners across the organization to find and tell Best Buy’s stories, including quickly understanding topics and issues and how to translate them into stories.

Basic qualifications:

  • An associate or bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or public relations
  • Minimum 2-4 years of media relations and PR experience 
  • Experience in strategic communication planning 
  • Writing and editing content for a variety of audiences and vehicles 
  • Experience developing and managing projects with internal stakeholders

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with meeting daily, weekly deadlines 
  • Skilled at translating complex messages and in a creative way that makes sense to your audience
  • Ability to work in a team environment working on assignments with overlapping priorities and schedules

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Excellent writing skills 
  • Strong copy writing, editing skills 
  • Strong knowledge of AP style
