The Zoological Society of Milwaukee (the Society) is seeking an Entry Level Graphic Designer to join a fun and talented team of professionals in supporting one of the most cherished community assets – the Milwaukee County Zoo. This role is responsible for designing and producing high quality artwork, marketing materials and signage for the Zoological Society, Milwaukee County Zoo and other clients.

This role works 100% on-site at the zoo with no remote option available. Deadline to apply is Friday, June 9.

  • Conceptualize, design and produce signage, multimedia and interactive displays utilizing modern design technologies and methods, visual design, motion design, and presentation graphics. (~50% of workload) 
  • Conceptualize, design and produce a variety of high-quality digital and print promotional materials such as brochures, publications, web graphics, and animations. 
  • Manage project workflow from initial design through production within timelines and budgets. 
  • Interface with internal clients to determine project/client needs and determine design solutions that align with budgets. 
  • Work with outside vendors to acquire competitive bids while ensuring best prices and highest quality. 
  • Review proofs and final layouts to ensure quality. 
  • Ensure optimal operation of wide-format equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; and evaluating new equipment. 
  • Attend and participate in bi-monthly Guest Experience Committee meetings. 
  • Maintain up-to-date technical competencies. 
  • Complete and maintain all required paperwork, records, documents, and files. 
  • Complete special projects as assigned.
  • Bachelor’s degree or technical certification in graphic design, fine arts, and commercial art or other related field, plus 1-3 years of experience in a graphic arts position. 
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Cloud suite; including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and Animate. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook. 
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized team player able to generate innovative ideas while grounding them in effective design principles. 
  • Knowledge of print, video, animation and online/web technologies. 
  • Experience with large format printing and production techniques. 
  • Knowledge of wide format printers and sign production techniques, including substrates, media, and products. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to effectively present information, strong interpersonal skills, customer service skills and professionalism. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize workflow while still meeting deadlines. 
  • Experience with project management software preferred. 
  • Ability to work independently and in teams. 
  • Ability to effectively present information, with excellent interpersonal skills, professionalism and the ability to provide excellent customer service. 
  • Ability to work Monday – Friday, with flexible hours when necessary, including weekends and overtime. 
  • Must have reliable transportation to the Milwaukee County Zoo. 
  • Passion for animals and the environment and willingness to support the Society’s and Zoo’s missions and goals.
