The Wisconsin Union is a financially self-supporting division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Financial support for the organization is provided by income earned by dining units and a variety of non-food units such as recreation, guest rooms and space rentals. Substantial support is also provided by student fees. The Wisconsin Union has an annual operating budget of $56 million and employs nearly 250 full-time staff and 1500 student staff in the departments of Program & Leadership, Hospitality Services, Facilities, Administration and the Office of the Director. In addition, over 300 student volunteers and 2,000 club members under the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) produce over 2,000 programs annually.

The Wisconsin Union Marketing/Communications Department supports the operational, administrative and program/service marketing and communication goals of the Student Leadership and Engagement division of Student Affairs. This includes Center for Leadership and Involvement, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Affairs Advancement, The Wisconsin Union, and UW Conference Centers.

Conceptualizes, plans, and executes digital and/or print design to support the strategic objectives of the Student Leadership and Engagement division of Student Affairs; creates on-brand, compelling visual assets used to inform, educate, inspire and/or persuade.

The position reports to the Wisconsin Union Creative Services Manager and works collaboratively with student designers, advisors, managers, and other unit personnel within the respective areas.

Conceptualizes, plans, and executes digital and/or print design to support the strategic objectives of the institution; creates on-brand, compelling visual assets used to inform, educate, inspire, and/or persuade.

  • 30% - Creates, designs, and produces artwork per project specifications through various mediums
  • 5% - Analyzes and identifies cost effective options to meet project requirements
  • 5% - Schedules logistics, secures resources, organizes, and monitors art production projects adhering to established timelines and expectations
  • 10% - Answers questions and provides information and problem resolution options to clients and stakeholders
  • 20% - Applies creative expertise within established brand and style guidelines
  • 10% - Works collaboratively with other creative professionals, engages in and responds to creative feedback, manages project workflow and timing, maintains files, and follows established work unit processes
  • 10% - Coordinate print projects throughout printing process; reviews orders, sends print-ready files to vendors, and reviews proofs.
  • 5% - Schedules logistics, secures resources, organizes, and monitors art production adhering to established timelines and expectations. Help with project logistics and expectations.
  • 5% - Train and mentor graphic design students, advising on graphics best practices, evaluating work and providing feedback to ensure designs are within brand guidelines.
  • 3+ years professional graphic design experience in an agency, business, or educational setting
  • Strong knowledge of graphic design principles and techniques and understanding of typography and font usage
  • High level of proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator (Adobe Animate a plus)
  • Experience with prepress and print production techniques- Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced design skills and a strong portfolio that demonstrates creativity, originality, and results-driven marketing or advertising projects
  • Ability to work and independently and cooperatively on complex projects, handling multiple priorities and tight deadlines, in a detail-oriented environment
  • An understanding of the University community as a unique setting; knowledge and sensitivity to current student concerns and interests
  • Ability and desire to work with a variety of people including students, employees, volunteers, professional staff, faculty and alumni
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated achievement in diversity and inclusion goals and a commitment to enhancing multicultural understanding in a diverse campus environment
  • Desire to learn and grow

Preferred Skills:

  • Photography skills and experience
  • HTML coding knowledge and experience
  • Email marketing and experience and basic knowledge of CRM systems
  • Animation / Motion graphics knowledge and experience
  • Minimum $48,000 ANNUAL (12 months) Depending on Qualifications.
