Our Corporate Communications team is seeking an internal communications manager to play an important role in helping to execute our communications strategy, which is designed to enhance the company’s reputation with both internal and external audiences. The ideal candidate will be a creative self-starter, committed to delivering quality communications that positively support our culture and our brand.

The job will be primarily internal communications, with a special focus on communications at our manufacturing plants. Navistar has four manufacturing plants located in Springfield, Ohio; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Huntsville, Alabama; and Escobedo, Mexico, as well as a number of additional non-corporate locations, representing almost 75 percent of our workforce. Many of these employees are “non-connected” employees who do not have regular access to company email or digital channels. This role will be responsible for executing a communications plan to reach those employees, working closely with manufacturing leadership and the Human Resources staff in each plant. While this role will be based at our corporate headquarters in Lisle, Ill., the internal communications manager will be expected to frequently visit our plants (one plant visit a month at a minimum) and will maintain strong relationships with plant leadership.

The internal communications manager will also be responsible for supporting various other corporate communications initiatives and daily tasks as time permits.

Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Executing a plant communications plan and developing clear and concise content for communications channels for a manufacturing employee audience, which will include monthly travel to plants in the U.S. and Mexico; 
  • Providing communications support and counsel to manufacturing leadership; 
  • Researching, writing and editing communications materials for a variety of channels and audiences (e.g., plant newsletter, daily news stories for corporate intranet, presentations for town halls, talking points for leaders, etc.); 
  • Supporting the company’s corporate communications programs and channels; 
  • Assisting with the revamp of company intranet site, and in digital communications like digital signage, internal social media and video; 
  • Assisting with communications measurement activities; 
  • Supporting special events, such as the company’s annual quality awards; 
  • Partnering with employees in other areas of the business on cross-functional projects; 
  • Providing general support as needed to members of the Communications team.

Position Purpose:

  • Writes, edits, reviews and oversees release of internal communication documents and programs that support the organization. 
  • Edits and enhances internal communication materials, including intranet, newsletters, emails/memos, webcasts and speeches. 
  • Reviews and edits essential internal communications prior to dissemination to ensure accuracy, clarity, and appropriateness. 
  • Ensures a “corporate voice” permeates messaging to employees and stakeholders. 
  • Coordinates internal communication efforts with those provided by others who focus on external communications (i.e., marketing communications, investor relations). 
  • Works closely with executive management team and departments to keep abreast of company developments and trends. May assist with the development and implementation of new and existing communication vehicles.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 5 years of communications experience

OR

  • Master’s degree
  • At least 3 years of communications experience

OR

  • At least 7 years of communications experience

Additional Requirements:

Qualified candidates, excluding current Navistar employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. Desired Skills:

  • Experience in a Corporate Communications environment or related field, preferably in communicating to “non-connected” employees 
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or related field is preferred 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with teams to build strong relationships and deliver results
