ALA Editions | Neal-Schuman, the book publishing imprints of the American Library Association, seek a Managing Editor to join the production team that produces 40 to 60 professional development titles, textbooks, and other print products a year.

Reporting to the Director of Editing, Design, and Production, the Managing Editor will be responsible for:

  • Evaluating manuscripts for editorial needs
  • Working with acquisitions editors and authors to further develop manuscripts as needed
  • Hiring and overseeing freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers
  • Setting schedules and budgets
  • Maintaining contact with authors throughout the production schedule
  • Reviewing page proofs for accuracy at all stages
  • Offering suggestions to streamline editorial processes
  • Maintaining in-house style guides


  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or related area.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years relevant editorial experience in trade, consumer, or nonprofit publishing.
  • Strong proofreading and editorial skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Chicago Manual of Style (17 ed.).
  • Proficient in MS Word.
  • InDesign and page layout familiarity a plus.

Starting salary range from the low $60s; negotiable based on experience and qualifications. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes medical, dental, generous paid vacation, and a retirement annuity.
