The Managing Editor/Public Relations Coordinator is responsible for planning and supporting the Association’s public relations and communications initiatives, including overseeing publication of the WDA Journal and WDA Sourcebook (both non-clinical publications), as well as assisting with media relations, writing and developing content for print and digital use.

Primary duties and responsibilities include: |

Oversee publication of the bimonthly print WDA Journal magazine, working with volunteer dentists who serve as Editor and Editorial Advisory Board to:

  • Develop a plan for each issue, organizing staff, contributors and consultants/vendors (including contracted graphic designer) to produce Journal in a timely manner
  • Identify articles, photos, graphics and other supporting material
  • Ensure regular content (e.g., columns, staff contributions, updates) is prepared and submitted on time
  • Prepare original articles and develop related social media and e-blast content
  • Edit/proofread articles and content provided by staff and outside contributors
  • Work with printer, mailhouse and WDA membership team to coordinate Journal printing/distribution
  • Serve as staff liaison to the WDA Editorial Advisory Board; coordinate and lead bimonthly EAB conference calls

Oversee publication of annual WDA Sourcebook (Membership Directory and Practice Guide); working with the Editor and EAB to:

  • Develop a plan for each annual issue, organizing staff, contributors and consultants/vendors (including contracted graphic designer) to produce the Sourcebook
  • Identify articles, photos, graphics and other supporting material
  • Ensure regular content (e.g., directory, staff contributions, updates) is prepared
  • Prepare original copy
  • Edit/proofread content provided by staff and outside contributors
  • Work with printer, mailhouse and WDA membership team to coordinate Journal printing/distribution

Manage WDA media relations program; working with the Director of Membership & Communications to:

  • Research, write, edit and oversee distribution of news releases and other media materials
  • Serve as contact for media inquiries and coordinate interviews with appropriate WDA spokespeople in response to media requests
  • Pitch and coordinate coverage of WDA-related stories with broadcast and print media throughout Wisconsin
  • Monitor and track WDA media coverage, includes maintaining media coverage spreadsheet
  • Track oral health issues and help prepare Association responses
  • Identify and prepare member spokespersons for media interviews and other opportunities

Sell display and classified advertising for various WDA communications, from original solicitation through coordination of billing with accounting department

  • Serve as primary advertising coordinator for print publications, including Journal and Sourcebook
  • Work with digital communications manager to update ShopWDA.org e-commerce website
  • Post classified and job board ads on WDA.org website

Provide public relations support to the Association, its subsidiaries and affiliated entities (e.g. WDA Foundation)

  • Draft and compile content for weekly member e-newsletter, monthly video news capsule and other member communications, including assisting with social media copywriting
  • Assist in planning and implementing public awareness campaigns
  • Participate in PR efforts by attending WDA events, taking pictures/video and providing on-site support
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or related discipline
  • At least two years of professional communications experience
  • Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills, including familiarity with AP style
  • Ability to communicate simple and complex information to a broad range of audiences
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills
  • Respect for detail and deadlines
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Proficiency (or strong interest in learning) various video editing and social media platforms
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a dynamic team
