Overview:

This position works with the editor in chief of the Rotary Magazine to supervise editorial staff duties and to manage the editorial process from development to final production. These include collaborating with colleagues and senior leaders across the organization to generate story ideas and set coverage priorities; overseeing editorial calendars and production schedules; writing and editing news features as needed and managing editorial staff and freelancers. As a creative collaborator and innovative problem-solver with a superior sense of news judgment, you are responsible for the overall integrity of copy, ensuring that all content has a consistent voice, is accurate and clean, and fits together in a well-thought-out manner.

You Will Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field. Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Minimum of 10 years of editorial and production management experience with a print or digital publication. 
  • Proven organizational and leadership skills and ability to manage several deadlines simultaneously, and to identify and develop stories for a news magazine with a diverse audience. 
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading and project management skills essential. 
  • Understanding of issues through a global perspective, and how to work in a complex global organization — inspiring and leading a creative, diverse team and cultivating new talent. 
  • Detailed understanding of the digital content space. 
  • Knowledge of a language other than English preferred; international work experience preferred.

You Are Good At:

  • Serve as a magazine point person and coordinate regular editorial meetings to assess leads from Rotary members, business units, freelance writers, and staff, as well as magazine team research, and to brainstorm ideas for upcoming issues. 
  • Work with the editorial and production team to plan stories that support Rotary’s Action Plan, strategic goals, and Communications priorities; maintain magazine editorial schedule; and oversee monthly lineups to ensure each issue contains an ideal mix of subject matter, including material relevant for that month. 
  • Serve as assignment editor and write features and department items as needed to ensure that Rotary’s content is relevant for use across the entire Rotary magazine network of 33 publications across the globe. 
  • Coordinate freelance copy editors and factcheckers, line edit all magazine copy before fact checking stage and oversee proofreading of all rounds of layouts and of binder. 
  • Collaborate with the art director and production manager to ensure all deadlines are met and partner with visual media and digital and social content experts to maintain Rotary magazine’s prominent presence on multiple media platforms.
