The Wisconsin School of Business at UW-Madison is seeking applicants interested in assisting in the successful design and implementation of editorial content. 

The Wisconsin School of Business at UW-Madison is seeking applicants interested in assisting in the successful design and implementation of editorial content. This position works on and with cross-functional team(s) to accomplish duties, which includes colleagues in the Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) unit as well as faculty and staff within the Wisconsin School of Business and reports to the IMC Director.

50% Editorial content management for communications, including managing story selections for Update magazine (the Wisconsin School of Business alumni magazine) and the editorial calendar (including web, social media, and public relations) for the Wisconsin School of Business to ensure promotion of strategic priorities, infusion of the brand and placement of stories in a variety of outlets that maximize exposure.

  • Plans editorial content, assigns writing and photography to staff and freelance contributors; informs cover and visual design, edits and proofreads copy and layout; supervises production.
  • Manages contributions from the IMC writers, editors and other school content contributors to ensure quality copy, appropriate adherence to deadlines and editorial standards, and consistent communications with contributors.
  • Plans and participates in editorial and advisory board meetings.

20% Represents IMC as publisher of Update magazine.

  • Coordinates advertising and inserts; collaborates with external ad agency and internal business development staff; serves as liaison to printer; coordinates bidding; submits print orders; coordinates distribution.
  • Manages workflow and deadlines to ensure content quality and delivery of publishing schedule
  • Leads project management of publication, collaborating with internal alumni relations team
  • Manages administrative tasks as needed.

15% Leads concept and development of School of Business publications and special editorial projects.

  • Leads development of major publication projects.
  • Manages workflow and ensures implementation across multiple communication platforms when applicable.
  • Writes, edits and proofreads for special projects as needed.

5% Participates on select cross-functional teams as needed.

  • Applies editorial and organization expertise
  • Communicates with Dean's Office about team activities and functions

5% Manages vendor relationships with external photographers.

  • Collaborates with creative staff to guide photography concepts and execution; schedules photographers and negotiates contract details; ensures adherence to deadlines.

5% Provides consultation and editorial expertise to internal and external clients.

  • Advises about re-concepting publications, design and use of photography; copyedits and proofreads as needed.

Degree and area of specialization:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Writing or related field. Masters degree preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

  • 7-10 years experience in magazine, publications editing or editorial direction
  • Excellent journalism judgment- Knowledge of print industry standards and processes
  • Outstanding written and overall communication skills; demonstrated creativity and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of and passion for key issues
  • Ability to conduct research from primary and secondary sources
  • Knowledge of and passion for UW-Madison and higher education.
