The Wisconsin Union is a financially self-supporting division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Financial support for the organization is provided by income earned by dining units and a variety of non-food units such as recreation, guest rooms and space rentals. Substantial support is also provided by student fees. The Wisconsin Union has an annual operating budget of $56 million and employs nearly 250 full-time staff and 1500 student staff in the departments of Program & Leadership, Hospitality Services, Facilities, Administration and the Office of the Director. In addition, over 300 student volunteers and 2,000 club members under the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) produce over 2,000 programs annually.

The Marketing Department manages the brand of the Wisconsin Union through brand-level and program/service specific efforts. The Marketing Specialist position is responsible for the overall marketing, advertising and promotional efforts for the Wisconsin Union Dining, Hospitality and Retail Services Division including restaurants, markets and cafes, catering and retail. Additional account assignments will be assigned.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

  • Minimum of three years of professional experience or its equivalent in marketing, advertising or communication required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of marketing, market research, advertising, graphic design, website development, and printing.
  • Account management experience preferred. Ability to develop partnerships with unit managers and understand their operations and finance status. Ability to develop and implement strategic marketing communications plan and evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Working knowledge of content management systems (CMS-Silverstripe and WordPress).
  • Experience using social media sites and tools, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Hootsuite, YouTube LinkedIn, as effective marketing tools.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills required including attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects and conflicting deadlines.
  • Good business, creative writing, advertising and editing skills required.
  • Strong oral communication skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision including skills leading the work of others.
  • A strong work ethic including an interest and ability to work as part of a team. Willingness to learn and take direction from clients, students, partners and other team members.
  • An understanding of the University community as a unique setting. Knowledge of and sensitivity to current student concerns and interests. Ability and desire to work with a wide variety of people including students, employees, volunteers, professional staff, faculty and alumni.
