Bookworm Gardens seeks a team-oriented, energetic Marketing and Communications Manager who will thrive in a fast-paced environment and who is well-suited to working collaboratively with a small staff. The Marketing and Communications Manager will carry out responsibilities in the administration and implementation of all organizational marketing. The individual will be a strong, experienced marketing professional that can holistically see BWG, all the legs and align and execute marketing initiatives. This includes savvy media buying as well as knowing the visual brand. The position provides an opportunity to enhance the Bookworm brand and create and implement an organization-wide marketing plan. This individual will: support other departments, programs, and events through content creation; maintain creative assets; exhibit fundamental strategic and creative communications skills; and work with internal and external stakeholders across all channels. The Marketing and Communications Manager will report to the Executive Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following...

  • Create a comprehensive marketing plan for the organization and establish and maintain uniform departmental standard operating procedures and guidelines 
  • Lead in the revamp and further development of BWG’s brand strategy and visual brand guide 
  • Manage the marketing budget 
  • Hire and manage the marketing intern 
  • Develop a plan to evaluate the effectiveness of the marketing efforts utilizing attendance records and analytics (Google Analytics, email metrics, and social media analytics) 
  • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director to create fundraising materials 
  • Work collaboratively with the Event Department to create and manage event and rental marketing and collateral (including flyers, web pages, Facebook events, social media posts, invitations) 
  • Work with the Membership and Visitor Services areas to create and manage membership and general visitation marketing and collateral 
  • Work collaboratively with the Education Department and Horticulture Department to create and manage educational and horticultural marketing and collateral 
  • Content Creation and Management: using Bookworm’s brand guidelines, produce all collateral, promotional and marketing materials, develop and post social media content for various platforms, capture and share Bookworm Garden’s experiences through photography and videography, create short promotional videos for digital marketing, provide strategic insight on reaching various demographics, and manage and oversee the website content 
  • External Communication: in coordination with the Executive Director and the Board President, create and distribute press packets, press releases and event calendars to newspapers, on-line sources, radio, television, magazines and trade publications, develop and maintain relationships with sales and promotional partners, field all press requested, and act as the Gardens spokesperson for community events 
  • Editing: act as editor for all Gardens publications, website, signage and collateral 
  • Create and maintain a press, collateral and content archive 
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • College degree in marketing or equivalent. 3-5 years experience in non-profit marketing and supervisory experience. Proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Design Suite. Experience with Altru is a plus. Strong organizational abilities, excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Customer service experience and administrative and organizational skills are essential; special events experience is desirable 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Interest in plants, gardens, children’s literature, and / or the natural world a plus 
  • Strong photography skills. Videography and video editing skills are a plus.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • The Marketing and Communications Manager will be required to obtain a bartending license if not currently licensed (used for occasional duties during special events).

Salary + Benefits:

Competitive with paid holidays, paid vacation, and access to retirement benefits. Bookworm Gardens does not offer health care benefits at this time.

Hours:

On Season (May - October): on-site standard business hours with occasional evening and weekend availability as required to support the department and organizational needs. Off Season (November - April): a flexible combination of on-site and remote work, with responsibilities shifting to partial time in December, January, and February.
