The Natural Resources Institute Marketing and Communications Unit Manager provides leadership, direction, and implementation for the marketing and communications strategy of the Institute, supporting the Extension mission and advancing the visibility and reach of the vibrant programs and projects carried out by Extension faculty and staff.

The Institute is comprised of a team of researchers and outreach specialists who possess a wide range of backgrounds and expertise. From providing water and forestry programming, conservation training and youth environmental education, to leading in-depth studies of the geology, mineral resources, lakes and groundwater of Wisconsin, our outreach specialists, educators, researchers, affiliates and support teams navigate complex issues, facilitate challenging conversations, and help prepare and guide the next generation of community leaders.

The position provides vision and oversight of the communications strategy ("road map") for the Institute, while supporting coordination and alignment of primary communications activities and products across Institute programs and Extension-led projects. This strategy is implemented in coordination with the broader Extension communications strategy and policies.

The Marketing and Communications Unit Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the Unit which is comprised of a talented group of communications professionals including graphic designers, an editor, a web developer, and hourly students. The Manager is responsible for modeling a positive workplace culture and providing excellence in supervisory and management responsibilities including staff recruitment, hiring, training, salary adjustment processes, and performance management and evaluation.

The position also manages and directs grant-funded and fee-for-service marketing and communications projects, where Extension is the lead or collaborator with external partners (e.g., state agency, federal agency, tribes, NGO's); responsibilities include project intake, scoping, budgeting and lifecycle management.

Specializations for the unit include expertise in accessible communication, short and long-form publications, branding and strategic marketing support, website planning and development, graphic design, editorial support, and social and traditional media.

The Marketing and Communications Unit Manager is an active member of the Institute leadership team and will participate in relevant Institute and Extension work groups and ad hoc teams to advance the mission of the unit, Institute, and broader organization.

Required:

  • At least 8 years of relevant experience with a record of progressive advancement and evidence of senior-level management responsibility
  • Supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to create and contribute to a positive and inclusive workplace
  • Experience managing complex, multifaceted marketing projects and associated budgets
  • Demonstrated success in project scoping, budgeting, implementing and evaluating marketing and communications services, including doing so in a culturally-relevant manner
  • Knowledge and skills to effectively interact with people from different cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation and other aspects of human diversity

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated familiarity with key marketing, design and project management tools including Microsoft Office, e-newsletter services, WordPress/similar content management systems, Adobe Creative Suite and project management systems (Smartsheet, Basecamp, Slack, etc.)
  • Experience with popular social media platforms and how to use them/measure results
  • Knowledge of the complex political environments in which Extension works, particularly at regional and state levels, and successful experience in these or similar environments
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in the areas of sustainability, natural resource management, or environmental sciences
  • Experience creating accessible and inclusive communications
