Media Relations Strategist

Plan, maintain, and direct comprehensive media relations, strategic content communications, social media and related activities for the College to communicate the College’s value to the community and advance its position in Northeast Wisconsin and higher education. Central role in creating opportunities and advancing the mission, vision and strategic plan through various communications channels and outreach efforts including integrated public/media relations, multimedia asset creation, and social media. Leads other College public information activities including crisis communications; provides recommendations on complex sensitive public information or communications issues; and monitors and responds to threats to the College's reputation. Ensure ethical journalistic standards. Must work effectively with minimal supervision.

Essential Functions Statement(s):

  • Develop comprehensive public relations and content strategies plan that aligns with NWTC’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities to influence public opinion and promote student engagement 
  • Manage college-wide media relations activities, including news advisories, story ideas, media exposure tracking and analysis, media inquiries, news conferences and event publicity 
  • Maintain visibility with area reporters, assignment editors, producers and other media practitioners to build and sustain robust relationships with members of the media while gaining understanding of their ongoing needs and challenges 
  • Assess content discovery and planning needs, ensuring the right content activities are prioritized and executed on cross-functional teams and within multiple platforms 
  • Align content strategy to create cohesive content experiences, including messaging strategy and voice and tone, across the customer journey 
  • Ensure public relations and content strategies are relevant to multiple cultural environments 
  • Serve as the liaison to Executive Leadership Team for media inquiries and media responses 
  • Coach staff and students in media relations including finding a story, interview style and talking points 
  • Provide coaching and strategic communications counsel to teams in alignment with the NWTC brand standards 
  • Manage, prepare and distribute College emergency information and crisis communication to support security, transparency and public confidence 
  • Participate in WTCS and industry partner media relations and awareness campaigns to promote technical education and to advance the core mission of the System as a whole 
  • Expect to work some evening and weekend hours and to be on call to respond to social media and reputation issues outside the College’s work hours to meet customer needs

  • Bachelor’s Degree (four-year college or university) preferred. An earned Associate Degree combined with relevant experience may be considered.


  • A minimum of three years related experience. 
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff preferred.

*An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Computer Skills:

  • Microsoft Office Suite, photo and video editing software, and social media management systems. 
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the District’s standard insurance policy terms.

LOCATION: Green Bay Campus

STANDARD HOURS: 40 hours per week. Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with flexibility to work other hours including evenings needed.


* Current benefit eligible employees will be placed within the pay range based on their current rate/range.
