Membership & Events Intern
Southeast Wisconsin
Milwaukee, WI

The Membership & Events Intern will assist with the development and implementation of strategic plans for growing membership levels for the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce and will assist in the planning, logistics and implementation of the Chamber’s programs and events. This is a tremendous opportunity for students seeking experience in nonprofit management, business, marketing and communications, or experience working in a professional LGBT organization.

This is an unpaid internship; however, interns are eligible to receive college credit. This position is part-time, between 10-15 hours a week. The expected duration of this internship is one semester (spring). The intern schedule is flexible and can accommodate a student schedule, however consistency and dependability are necessary to the successful completion of this internship.

The Membership & Events Intern reports to the President & CEO, but will work closely with other staff members. This position requires the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Training and support will be offered and available to the intern throughout the duration of the internship.

Major tasks of the position include:

Among the major duties include, but not limited to:

1. Assist with the management and upkeep of our membership database (30%)

  • Learn the basics of ChamberMaster (our membership-management software) and seek ways to maximize the utility of current membership management systems
  • Enter and update member records in database as needed (e.g. calling members to verify information is accurate and up-to-date, assisting with the creation of membership profiles, etc.) 
  • Assist in generating and analyzing custom lists and membership reports

2. Collaborate with staff to develop and implement new member outreach campaigns (20%)

  • Work with staff to develop marketing materials for prospective members (including online marketing, email marketing, and direct marketing)
  • Under the direction of the Managing Director, research, collect and compile information useful to membership development efforts
  • Help create new and update existing promotional materials including mailing materials, flyers, slides, sales sheets, etc. 
  • Prepare and distribute bulk membership mailing materials such as applications, new member packets and postcards

3. Work with staff to improve membership experience for current members (20%)

  • Help develop and implement a strategy for check-in with members at important benchmarks (e.g. midway through membership) 
  • Call and invite members to participate in Chamber events and programs 
  • Compile and organize membership information included in orientation intake forms into cohesive format

4. Help with the planning and implementation of Chamber events (30%)

  • Work with staff to plan and organize event details such as scheduling, contacting venues, organizing guest lists, sending out invitations and doing follow up with members 
  • Develop promotional and marketing materials for Chamber events (including online marketing, email marketing and direct marketing)
  • Create surveys and analyze feedback from Chamber members after events

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA) Qualifications:

  • Interest in LGBTQ issues, nonprofit management, business, marketing and/or communications 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Excel, and Google Docs preferred
  • Some experience with database management and/or data entry a plus but not required, willingness to learn new systems
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to think creatively and analytically
  • Strong interpersonal skills, must be comfortable on the phone and interacting with the public
  • Organized, dependable and detail oriented
  • Able to work well independently and as part of a team


  • Has earned or is pursuing degree in relevant field; or comparable work experience 
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of member information 
  • Available to work 10-15 hours a week (schedule is flexible between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Monday - Friday)

This is an unpaid internship; however, interns are eligible to receive college credit.
