The Outreach & Events Intern will assist with the planning, logistics and implementation of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce’s programs and events, as well as presenting the organization and organizing presences at Pride festivities and other events around the state during the summer.

The Outreach & Events Intern, working closely with the President & CEO and other staff, will assist with planning at every stage of the process; from conception to completion. This is a tremendous opportunity for students seeking experience in nonprofit management, marketing and communications, business, event planning, or experience working in a professional LGBT organization.

The Intern will be engaged in planning of several signature events in the summer, including the Pride Business Showcase, the Business Leaders Breakfast and Out in the Kitchen, as well as our regular networking events.

The Intern will also be responsible for organizing and representing the LGBT Chamber at various Pride festivities in Wisconsin, including at PrideFest in Milwaukee. Reliable transportation is required. This is an unpaid internship; however, interns are eligible to receive college credit.

This position is part-time, between 10-15 hours a week (including weekends). The intern schedule is flexible; however consistency and dependability are necessary to the successful completion of this internship. This position requires the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. The intern will have significant interaction with the public and may at times be asked to work cooperatively with other staff. Training and support will be offered and available to the intern throughout the duration of the internship.

Major tasks of the position include:

Among the major duties include, but not limited to:

1. Organize Presence of Chamber at various outreach events (50%)

  • Prepare materials for outreach events Research potential external outreach events to help recruit members 
  • Staff the LGBT Chamber Booth at various Pride Festivities in Wisconsin, including Milwaukee PrideFest, NEW Pride Alive, and Magic Festival in Madison 
  • Conduct follow up with contacts made during different outreach events

2. Help with the planning and implementation of Chamber events (40%)

  • Work with staff to plan and organize event details such as scheduling, contacting venues, organizing guest lists, sending out invitations and arranging catering services
  • Develop promotional and marketing materials for Chamber events (including online marketing, email marketing and direct marketing)
  • Create surveys and analyze feedback from Chamber members after events

3. Provide support to Chamber membership team (10%)

  • Learn the basics of ChamberMaster (our membership-management software) and seek ways to maximize the utility of current membership management systems
  • Enter and update member records in database as needed (e.g. calling members to verify information is accurate and up-to-date, assisting with the creation of membership profiles, etc.) 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA) Qualifications:

  • Interest in LGBTQ issues, nonprofit management, business, marketing and/or communications 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Excel, and Google Docs preferred
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to think creatively and analytically
  • Strong interpersonal skills, must be comfortable on the phone and interacting with the public
  • Organized, dependable and detail oriented
  • Able to work well independently and as part of a team

Requirements:

  • Has earned or is pursuing degree in relevant field; or comparable work experience 
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of member information 
  • Available to work 10-15 hours a week (schedule is flexible between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Monday - Friday with some weekend hours required from time to time at events)
  • Must have a Driver's License and reliable transportation
