Purpose of Position:

The packaging designer provides creative thinking and execution on a wide variety of packaging project types and at various stages in the design development process. Working closely with the Managing Art Director and members of the creative team, this candidate will conceptualize and execute ideas that are appropriate to brand strategies, target consumer trends and project objectives. The ability to develop attention-grabbing packaging that is functional and appealing to customers is required.

This person must submit a strong portfolio with a minimum of three packaging samples plus a variety of other graphic design pieces that demonstrate creativity, superior typographic sensibility, attention to detail and knowledge of market and consumer trends. Familiarity with packaging materials and print dielines is required.

This role requires the designer to be very organized and able to meet tight deadlines. They must also have strong problem-solving skills to quickly identify and rectify mistakes. Package designers also require input and assistance from several different groups, so strong interpersonal abilities and project management skills are necessary. This combination of skills allows a package designer to create functional, yet creative and unique materials that engage the customer.

What You’ll Do:

  • Must have an understanding of the package design development process from concept, to prototype to final execution 
  • Create and cultivate ideas that meet design objectives outlined in the creative brief 
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of production techniques including organized file build and exporting production-ready files 
  • Attention to detail is a must 
  • Articulate design strategies to creative cross-functional team including: Copywriters, Production Artists, Photographers, Illustrators 
  • Collaborate with Managing Art Director to develop and define consistent brand messaging and aesthetic on all packaging 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product, business, retail, and marketing to understand their needs, mandatories, safety/import/co-branding specifications and deadlines 
  • Understand and comply with established budgets and cost-saving initiatives 
  • Evaluates consumer and market trends for packaging materials 
  • Present packaging project concepts to direct team, creative leaders and cross-functional teams 
  • Be accountable for timelines and quality of work 
  • Must have a problem-solving mindset and foster a positive team attitude 
  • Flexibility to take on unexpected challenges and opportunities in an effort to grow 
  • Ability to react quickly, act with a sense of urgency and meet the needs of the fast paced retail insustry

What We’re Looking For:

  • Minimum of 2-4 years of experience (more preferred) as packaging designer, preferably in an in-house creative department 
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in graphic design or packaging design preferred 
  • Strong sense of design, packaging hierarchy and typography 
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat and InDesign) 
  • Knowledge of the printing industry as it relates to Packaging Prepress 
  • Great organizational, interpersonal skills and detail-oriented 
  • Ability to work under pressure without compromising performance or accuracy in a deadline-oriented environment 
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to work in a team environment 
  • Must be able to multi-task within a fast-paced working environment
