We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Public Information Officer on our Editorial Channel team. In this role you will promote AMA programs, policies and initiatives through comprehensive strategic communications efforts. Serves as lead PIO for Litigation Center and ARC activities, working closely with manager of communications planning to ensure alignment across Business Units. Secure favorable media placements for AMA. Provides public relations counsel to AMA leaders to position initiatives optimally.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pitches and News Releases

  • Works closely with Litigation Center and ARC to develop strategies, pitches, press materials for major announcements, issues demanding response 
  • Writes news releases, backgrounders, talking points, statements, and other editorial content as needed to effectively communicate AMA position on timely issues 
  • Builds and maintains relationships with BU and AMA leadership to best anticipate breaking news, manage sensitive media inquiries, and ensure AMA leaders, Trustees, BUs receive the best counsel possible about media implications of their actions, words, and work

Media Relations

  • Leverages relationships with reporters to secure media placement for AMA Trustees and other leaders, using the opportunities to advance and promote AMA messages, advocacy and programs 
  • Builds robust media opportunities around AMA Trustees and leaders’ travel and speaking appearances, creating a surround sound effect for BU work 
  • Serves as a primary liaison between the AMA, its spokespeople, and the media to help communicate AMA policies on timely health/medical issues, and exhibits savvy about when to engage, when to push back, and when to refer reporters away from the AMA

Media Planning, Monitoring and Targeting

  • Uses media management software to target specific media, and to monitor AMA mentions, media placements, ensure the AMA is reaching optimal reporters 
  • Uses communications planning software to support calendaring and coordination of tactics and activities

May include other responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree required in communications, journalism or related discipline 
  • Minimum of five years experience in journalism, media relations or related field. Medical/health/legal media relations experience preferred 
  • Strong working relationships with print and broadcast media 
  • Proven written and excellent verbal communication skills 
  • Strong planning, organizing, and prioritizing skills, as well as proven track record of meeting deadlines 
  • Demonstrated ability to provide communications advice and counsel to leaders and senior-level staff 
  • Skilled at performing in a team environment as well as being a strong individual contributor 
  • Exceptional interpersonal and presentation skills, including ability to persuade and negotiate in a high visibility environment 
  • Willingness to travel as needed
