The purpose of the Public Relations Advisor is to provide exceptional PR and media relations support for Kane’s clients. Within Kane, the PR advisor is both a strategic and tactical practitioner and reports to Kane’s director of public relations. You will be responsible for the public relations for Kane clients, including the PR portion of integrated marketing communications plans, working closely with our team to bring PR strategy to life. You’re an excellent writer, you naturally develop solid relationships with key players, and you’re aggressive with media engagement and storyline development. You have your finger on the pulse of social media and understand the importance of brand, marketing and PR working together. Because you’re an active listener and you have great instincts, your clients and your team respect your work and trust your advice. The PR advisor will be challenged by projects with complex PR needs, stakeholder engagement opportunities, crisis communications needs and significant media relations.

Accountabilities:

  1. Public relations planning - You love digging below the surface to uncover our clients’ PR needs. You write formal PR plans with clear goals, SMART objectives, creative strategies and tactics, and measurement recommendations.
  2. Public relations plan execution - Rolling out the PR plan may be your favorite part of the work. You are responsible for personally developing and managing the implementation of client PR strategies and tactics - ensuring you stay on time and on budget. You delegate to and empower associates and interns to assist you, and work collaboratively with other members of the team.
  3. Media relations and pitching - Building relations with and pitching to media come naturally to you. You think creatively about the pitch and do your homework before picking up the phone. Reporters respect you because of your thorough approach.
  4. Public relations reporting - You know how to develop detailed reports demonstrating the reach and impact of PR. You work with your team to ensure reporting needs are clear before the work starts, mechanisms are in place and evaluation is done throughout the project, not just when the work is complete.
  5. Public relations research and continuous learning - Research is foundational to our work at Kane. If your client doesn’t supply you with the information, you find ways to get what you need to properly plan and make great recommendations. You’re self-motivated to learn about your clients’ industries and to drive your own professional development. You stay abreast of new developments in the PR industry and serve as a resource to our account supervisors and clients in that respect.
  6. Public relations project estimating - You work with Kane’s account supervisors or members of the leadership team to make sure projects have accurate estimates before they begin.

Required experience and core competencies for this position include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism or related studies
  • Three to five years of public relations experience with progressive job responsibilities 
  • Agency or corporate experience a must, previous experience as a journalist a plus 
  • Excellent critical thinking and professional decision-making skills, able to make tough decisions independently and collaborate for solutions when needed
  • Experience working with or a passion for health care, human services and government is a plus!
  • Superior oral and written communication skills; advanced proofreading and editing ability 
  • Maintain a professional, client-ready demeanor and high standard of etiquette at all times
  • Demonstrated proficiency and affinity for digital tools and platforms (including social media)
  • Maintain knowledge and a demonstrated understanding of industry, local, national media 
  • Fluency in G-Suite and Cision (or related PR software) 
  • Ability to travel as necessary contingent on client and new business needs 
  • Proven ability to work in a self-driven environment with the ability to manage and organize tasks without formal framework
