The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is seeking to fill a full-time vacancy for an Public Relations Specialist.

UW-Milwaukee’s University Relations Division is hiring a public relations specialist to support university partnerships and lead marketing efforts focused on communities of color, veterans and other diverse groups. A significant portion of the job will be researching public relations issues, making strategy recommendations and writing articles, emails, web content and other materials needed to execute that strategy. This position may be a good fit for journalists looking to transition their careers as well as those with experience in public relations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications or related field
  • Three years of experience as a reporter with a news organization that has daily deadlines, such as a wire service, newspaper, television station or online news site or equivalent experience at a public relations firm or in-house public affairs department

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, exercise sound judgment and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to craft a public relations strategy, crisis communications strategy or similar strategy for news coverage of a breaking event
  • Demonstrated ability to gather data and research issues in the news or with the potential to make news
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing/editing
  • Demonstrated success as a project manager including management of budget
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AP style
  • Demonstrated abilty to network and build relationships, particularly with diverse communities
  • Demonstrate established relationships within communities of color, veterans and other diverse groups
  • 2 or more years experience with a major regional or national news organization
  • Experience working with Wordpress or a similar content management system to update websites
