An employee in this classification performs work of considerable difficulty by supporting the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer in achieving the vision, mission, goals and objectives of the college as related to the development and implementation of communication strategies. Work requires the ability to achieve results through leadership of a communications team. Direction received by the assigned manager.

Essential Duties:

  1. Develop and maintain relationships with media and local and regional NIMS public information officers to effectively work with them during a crisis. Serve as a member of the college’s emergency response team to plan, and respond to emergency situations on campus. Prepare, maintain and test the college’s crisis communications plan and resources. 
  2. Plan and execute strategic and day-to-day media relations and communications, including story pitches and proactive and reactive plans and tactics. 
  3. Manage the strategy and content creation for the college’s official social media sites. 
  4. Oversee strategy and execution of traditional and digital communication platforms to meet communication goals. 
  5. Represent the Marketing and Communications team on college committees. 
  6. Research and implement new media to build and sustain relationships, and provide strategic consultation, planning and assisting in the incorporation of blogs, podcasts, social media, and other technology in the college’s digital communication efforts. 
  7. Work with team members in Marketing and Communications to provide input as needed on traditional and digital content in alignment with marketing and communications goals and initiatives. 
  8. Support efforts geared toward upholding college branding standards and to ensure key messages and institutional facts are consistent across all platforms. 
  9. Provide support and assist with planning of strategic institutional events, such as convocation, graduation, grand openings, and other ceremonies. 
  10. Available to respond to internal and external customers, either in person or over the phone, during scheduled business hours. 
  11. Demonstrate independent judgement and discretion in making position related decisions.
  12. Maintain required training, licensure and/or certification 
  13. Maintain confidentiality of privileged information and adheres to applicable privacy laws. 
  14. Demonstrate sensitivity, understanding and respect of diverse populations within the workplace. 
  15. Maintain an understanding of the work of colleagues to effectively provide backup and/or support for co-workers during times when the division is short-staffed or experiencing an increased volume of work. 
  16. Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes days/evenings/weekends as needed by the department. 
  17. Oversee editorial plan, timeline and planning for institutional publications. 
  18. Serve as direct back-up to Chief Marketing and Communications Officer.

Other Duties:

  1. May draft correspondence, speech writing and media messages to meet outreach needs as necessary. 
  2. May write stories for various publications as needed. 
  3. May be designated as college spokesperson. 
  4. May need to be available to respond to after hours emergency calls on a rotating basis. 
  5. Other duties as assigned that pertain to the job description.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Master’s degree in communications, public relations or related field, with 7 years of progressively responsible experience including 3 years in a supervisory or management capacity in public relations, government relations, social media management, journalism, or communications or equivalent combination of training and experience. 
  2. Considerable knowledge of social media management platforms and best practices. 
  3. Considerable knowledge of best practices for strategic communications planning and implementation. 
  4. Considerable knowledge of AP Style editing guidelines and other editorial standards and copy-editing techniques. 
  5. Considerable knowledge of project management practices and procedures. 
  6. Considerable knowledge of crisis communications. 
  7. Considerable knowledge of institutional goals and priorities. 
  8. Good knowledge of continuous improvement principles and practices. 
  9. Good knowledge of media distribution databases and best practices. 
  10. Considerable skill creating and adapting messages across a broad spectrum of mediums and audiences, with emphasis on social media platforms. 
  11. Considerable skill in content development including, but not limited to, writing, editing, proof reading, publication production, printing, website content, photography, and/or social media.
  12. Considerable skill in written, verbal, and visual communication including the ability to present ideas and information clearly, effectively and persuasively. 
  13. Considerable skill in applicable software, including but not limited to Internet research tools, email marketing tools, project management/workflow systems, and analytics tools. 
  14. Working skill tracing, reviewing and analzing analytics.

Rate of Pay: $73,120.
