The Sr. Director, Optum Rx Internal Communications is responsible for strategy and execution of internal communications for Optum Rx and its diverse teams and capabilities. This individual provides strategic communications counsel for Optum Rx and facilitates and ensures quality execution of communications services for the function.

This individual will partner with the UnitedHealth Group and Optum business partners and communications colleagues to ensure strategies, message platform and approach is aligned across internal and external stakeholders and supports the Optum Rx business priorities.

This position reports to the Vice President of Optum Rx Communications.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement campaigns that effectively engage key stakeholders and influencers, amplifying the unique value Optum Rx delivers to the U.S. health system and the consumers and patients it serves 
  • Lead a team to deliver reputation - and awareness-building priorities that advance Optum Rx’s business goals, as well as evaluating and effectively responding to reputational challenges, issues and crises in a fast-paced, demanding environment 
  • Develop communications strategies – tailored to the specific medium and audience requirements – with the priorities, work and messaging 
  • Establish and enforce quality standards and protocols that ensure consistently exceptional, high-quality work product, including all written materials and messaging generated by the team 
  • Build trust-based relationships with the Optum Rx leaders through proactive, ongoing, expert strategic counsel 
  • Analyze data and results from communication initiatives to identify and implement opportunities to improve content, delivery approaches and overall effectiveness 
  • Collaborate across UnitedHealth Group to actively supporting cross-enterprise communications priorities and initiatives 
  • Provide consistent support and coaching to team members through expert guidance and mentorship 
  • Set a positive example as a team and cultural leader, demonstrating and advancing our values of integrity, compassion, relationships, innovation and performance

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field 
  • 10+ years of experience in a strategic internal communications leadership role 
  • Extensive writing and editing experience with an uncompromising eye for quality and clarity 
  • Demonstrated experience and skill leading a high-performing, strategic communications team 
  • Demonstrated experience developing and leading successful multi-channel engagement campaigns integrating traditional, digital, and social media strategies 
  • Demonstrated experience successfully managing emerging and urgent issues and crises with significant reputational and business implications, and the ability to develop and implement strategic, effective response plans taking into account various audiences 
  • Ability to flex and write/edit effectively for different audiences, applying appropriate tone, detail and message elevation for each unique situation 
  • Ability to recognize and assess reputational opportunities and issues, effectively communicating both the implications of the issue at hand and a clear path forward to executive stakeholders and team members proactively and quickly 
  • Ability to travel nationally, on occasion as needed to OptumRx locations

  • Ability and willingness to collaborate with communication leaders across multiple businesses, in the interest of telling a more integrated, holistic story and protecting and elevating the reputation of the broader enterprise
