Your Challenge:

This position plays a key role in bringing HIMSS’s vision to realize the full health potential of every human, everywhere, to life. In this role, you will be responsible for managing the President and CEO’s executive communications platform, supporting the CEO as the lead spokesperson for HIMSS, including speechwriting, PR and media outreach. The position creates communications strategies and speeches aligned to our organizational strategy, brand, vision and mission, to inspire our members and other health professionals around the world.

Essential Functions:

  • Write high-quality speeches and talking points for the HIMSS CEO and support CEO as the lead spokesperson and storyteller for HIMSS. 
  • Create strategic messaging that conveys HIMSS’s corporate narrative and brand voice to external and internal audiences, including media, policymakers, market suppliers, partners and, particularly, HIMSS’s 100,000+ members across the globe. 
  • Manage PR and media outreach on behalf of the CEO. 
  • Research, develop, write and edit a wide variety of materials for the HIMSS CEO, including quotes, video scripts, speeches, talking points, backgrounders, narratives and thought leadership pieces, as well as correspondence with key stakeholders and other written materials. 
  • Interact with senior leaders across HIMSS to remain current on the society’s strategy, priorities, research and services. 
  • Weave HIMSS’s accomplishments, strategies and business goals into meaningful messaging and narratives into CEO speeches. 
  • Build trust with CEO, using limited face time to draw out ideas and preferences and create outstanding personalized content. 
  • Partner with HIMSS teams to execute against strategy, conduct research and write under deadline pressure. 
  • Review all internal and external facing collateral distributed on behalf of CEO. 
  • Prep CEO and develop messaging for key government-focused events, in partnership with the Government Relations team.

What you will need to be successful:

  • Bachelor’s or other advanced degree in liberal arts, business, communications, marketing, healthcare or similar field. 
  • Minimum seven (7) years professional speechwriting experience, preferably in executive communications. 
  • High-functioning knowledge of the healthcare ecosystem to be an active participant in developing communiations strategies and messaging 
  • Outstanding writing and interviewing skills, and extensive experience in positions that required writing messaging, reports, articles, briefings and other materials. 
  • Exceptional editing, storytelling, researching, fact-checking and proofreading skills to deliver messages that are clear, accurate and persuasive. 
  • Experience working closely with and writing for high-level executives, including working proficiently in a fast-paced, changing environment, and working well under pressure to deliver high-quality communications under tight deadlines and on short notice. 
  • Ability to inspire trust and confidence from executive leadership, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. 
  • High personal motivation supporting a strong work ethic, flexibility and creativity. 
  • Strong negotiation, organization and people skills. 
  • Strong leadership, problem solving, critical thinking, active listening, and persuasive oral, presentation and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as and collaboratively. 
  • Ability to work well with a wide range of internal and external partners to incorporate new information and work toward appropriate decisions and reach desired outcomes. 
  • Understanding of and experience communicating about complex global and domestic issues, including health, education, climate and other socioeconomic issues.
