As part of an integrated marketing and communications team, manage all aspects of traditional and digital marketing for the Society, including the development and execution of marketing plans with subsequent analysis of major marketing projects; perform competitive analyses and develop ideas for marketing initiatives; manage the marketing e-blast program; contribute marketing content to STS social media sites and the STS website; manage survey development, dissemination, and analysis; and supervise staff and guide their professional development.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute strategic marketing plans for key areas of the Society, especially membership (recruitment and retention), education (live meetings and online products). 
  • Execute tactics utilizing an integrated, multimedia approach (print, email, website, video, social media, etc.), meeting deadlines, and staying within budget. 
  • Manage general and targeted promotional emails, maintaining a calendar, soliciting topics, writing, designing, reviewing, and distributing the blasts, including STS Weekly. 
  • Leverage data to research, analyze, and submit ideas for new marketing activities. 
  • Seek competitive bids on design and print projects for marketing activities. 
  • Supervise the Marketing Manager. 
  • Monitor marketing project metrics such as response rates, site visits, open rates, and clickthroughs and analyze project effectiveness. 
  • Write analysis reports on selected marketing projects, utilizing current metrics and historical data and making data-driven recommendations. 
  • Serve as the lead department contact for the STS blast email program and analyze member and non-member engagement with these emails. 
  • Create and/or coordinate the creation and placement of house ads (print and electronic) in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and other STS publications and communication pieces. 
  • Regularly update marketing copy on STS.org, utilizing SEO techniques and ensuring that website content is consistent and meets Society branding and style standards. 
  • Contribute content to STS social media sites related to marketing projects. 
  • Manage social media advertising and digital retargeting campaigns. 
  • Oversee the creation, distribution, and analysis of STS surveys, including course tests (pre- and post-) and member needs assessments. 
  • Write articles for, edit, and proofread STS publications as assigned. 
  • Assist at meetings and conventions as assigned (some travel required). 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 5-7 years related work experience in marketing, especially with digital marketing platforms.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent strategic thinking and communication skills 
  • Proven track record of creating and delivering successful marketing campaigns on time and on budget 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Creative Suite, web editing software, HTML, Google Analytics, and CMS platforms 
  • Strong knowledge of visual communications design principles 
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and follow-through capabilities; attention to detail and time management are essential. 
  • Effectively perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, volunteer leaders, other organizations, and industry contacts; tact, diplomacy, and good judgment are essential.
