As a senior writer, you will be helping to write, edit and produce content across UnitedHealth Group’s digital properties, including a highly visible daily news and intelligence briefing for senior executives, as well as internal and external channels that reach a broad audience, including UnitedHealth Group’s employees.

You will leverage your writing expertise, business acumen and interpersonal skills to support strategic and business priorities, while working with a core team of writers and editors to produce accurate and accessible summaries of relevant UHG, health care industry and business-related news and commentary.

This position requires a strategic thinker with experience working in a matrixed organization. It requires superb writing and interviewing skills, project management expertise and strong attention to detail. It also will rely on the ability to develop relationships with teams and leaders throughout the company.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Write and edit content for a highly visible daily news and intelligence briefing for UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare and Optum leaders, and support content development for internal and external use 
  • Distill complicated, technical messages into simplified, jargon-free language 
  • Adhere to applicable internal and external communications standards established for the business (e.g., style guides, communications industry standards, etc.) 
  • Collaborate with internal partners to drive key message and objectives 
  • Deeply understand the variety of internal audiences across the enterprise and their needs and motivations to ensure product resonance 
  • Engage with senior executives and senior leaders, as well as external stakeholders with significant relationship to UHG, to develop content 
  • Help ensure that all published material has undergone the appropriate approvals, including legal clearance, as outlined by UHG executives 
  • Use and develop channel measurement and analytics to inform and improve audience understanding and drive increased traffic to and engagement with content 
  • Embody and promote UHG corporate values and ethics, and demonstrate a passion for our mission

Secondary Responsibilities: (in addition to those already mentioned)

  • Develop written content for a variety of internal and external initiatives, including conferences, meetings, presentations, scripts, key messages and more 
  • Develop communications content, tailored to the specific medium and audience requirements 
  • Adapt writing style/tone to meet the needs of the specific message/audience/ channel (e.g., nuance, complexity)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, communications, journalism or public relations, or related field 
  • 7+ years of business or public policy writing and editing experience 
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with experience producing content for a wide variety of uses and channels 
  • Proficient in AP style and grammar 
  • Candidate must provide writing samples

Preferred Qualifcations:

  • Experience in researching a breadth of business-related topics 
  • Health care experience 
  • Ability to quickly identify relevant content from large volumes of information 
  • Ability to understand complex issues and construct compelling, logical and nuanced messages 
  • Sound news judgment, including an understanding and awareness of relevant external environments and news cycles 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with highly confidential information and senior executives 
  • Exemplary organizational skills, and an eye for quality and attention to detail in a deadline-driven environment
